Retaining Walls Guide

The document provides guidelines for calculating the height of retaining walls by subtracting soil levels and rounding to 200 mm increments. It details the specifications for sleepers, including their fixed height and available lengths, along with a formula for determining the number of sleepers needed based on wall dimensions. Additionally, it explains how to calculate the height of UC and PFC posts based on wall height and footing details, specifying ordering increments for the posts.

RETAINING WALLS

Wall Height

In finding the wall height, subtract the soil level outside the wall to soil level inside the wall and round it
up to 200 mm increments.

Example:

Soil level outside the wall = 100.24

Soil level inside the wall = 100

100.24 – 100 = .24, Wall Height = .4 m

Sleepers

Sleepers' height is always 200 mm

Concrete Sleepers Lengths are ordered at 1.8 m, 2m, and 2.4 m while

Timber Sleepers are ordered at 1.8 m and 2.4 m.

Example:

Wall Height = .4 m, Wall Length is 10.3 m

Concrete Sleepers Length = 2 m

Number of sleepers = [Wall Length x (Wall Ht. / Sleepers Ht.)] divided by the sleepers' length

= [10.3 x (.4/.2)] / 2

= 10.3 = 11 pcs – 2m Concrete Sleepers

UC and PFC Posts

UC & PFC Post’s height depends on the details.

Sample Details:

If the wall ht. = .4 m , then

Spacing of the posts = 2 m , Footing Depth = 1 m,

Footing Diameter = 450 mm

Ht of the post = (Wall Ht. + Footing Depth) – 100 mm

= (.4 + 1) - .1

= 1.3 m

UC and PFC are ordered at 300 mm increments starting at (.9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, etc)

Therefore,

1.5 m UC posts will be ordered

Note:

PFC C Channels will be the posts place on the ends of the wall while PFC 90 Degree or 45 Degree will be
place if there are turns on the wall.
