EXPERIMENT – 5

OBJECTIVE:

To familiarize with networking hardware components such as RJ45, UTP, Fiber Optic Cable,
Switch, NIC, Router, Wireless Access Point (WAP), and Modem.

THEORY:

• RJ45 Connector:

• Definition: RJ45 (Registered Jack 45) is a standardized connector commonly used for
Ethernet networking, designed to fit into Ethernet ports on devices such as computers,
routers, and switches.
• Used with: Ethernet cables (such as Cat5e, Cat6, etc.).
• Physical Appearance: A rectangular connector with 8 pins that make contact with
the wires inside the Ethernet cable.

• UTP Cable (Unshielded Twisted Pair):

• Definition: UTP is a type of network cable commonly used in Ethernet

communication. It consists of multiple pairs of twisted copper wires without
additional shielding.
• Used for: Ethernet networking, including local area networks (LANs) and internet
connectivity.
• Categories: Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, etc., with Cat6 providing better performance than
Cat5e.

• Fiber Optic Cable:

• Definition: A high-performance networking cable made of glass or plastic strands

that transmit data using light signals.
• Used for: High-speed, long-distance communication networks. Ideal for connecting
servers, data centers, and providing internet backbone connections.
• Types: Single-mode and multi-mode fiber.
• Advantages: Offers faster speeds, greater bandwidth, and long-range connectivity.

• Network Interface Card (NIC):

• Definition: A hardware component that allows a computer or device to connect to a

network.
• Types: Wired (Ethernet NIC) and wireless (Wi-Fi NIC).
• Function: Converts data from the computer into a format suitable for network
transmission and vice versa.

• Switch:
• Definition: A network device that connects multiple devices within a Local Area
Network (LAN) and forwards data based on MAC addresses.
• Function: Allows devices to communicate efficiently by creating direct paths
between devices.
• Types:
o Managed Switch: Provides more control over traffic and network
management.
o Unmanaged Switch: A basic, plug-and-play device with no configuration
options.

• Router:

• Definition: A device that forwards data packets between computer networks,

typically routing data from a Local Area Network (LAN) to external networks like the
internet (WAN).
• Function: Provides internet access, assigns IP addresses via DHCP, and offers
network security using firewalls.
• Types:
o Wired Router: Uses Ethernet cables for data transmission.
o Wireless Router: Provides both wired and wireless network connectivity.

• Wireless Access Point (WAP):

• Definition: A device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using
Wi-Fi technology.
• Function: Acts as a bridge between the wired LAN and wireless clients, such as
laptops and smartphones.
• Placement: Typically installed in areas requiring wireless coverage to extend network
range.

• Modem:

• Definition: A device that modulates and demodulates signals for data transmission
over telephone lines, coaxial cables, or fiber-optic cables.
• Function: Provides internet connectivity by converting digital data from the computer
into analog signals for transmission and vice versa.

CONCLUSION:

Upon completing this lab, you will have gained hands-on experience with essential
networking hardware such as RJ45 connectors, UTP cables, fiber optic cables, NICs,
switches, routers, WAPs, and modems. This practical exposure will help you better
understand how these devices work together to form a network.
