INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CANDIDATE:


1. This paper has TWO sections: A and B;
2. Answer ALL questions in sections A and THREE questions in section B;
3. You are provided with a separate answer booklet;
4. Marks for each question are as indicated;
5. Do not write on this question paper.

This paper consists of FIVE (5) printed pages with FIFTEEN (15) questions.
Candidates should check the question paper to ascertain that all pages are printed as

SECTION A: (40 MARKS)


Answer ALL questions in this section.
1. Factorize the expression (3 Marks)
19x2 - 20x+1
2. Given that x=2, find the values of y and z for the equations
x +y-z=-1 and
x-2y+z=-7 (4 Marks)
3. Change 0.67̈ into a fraction (3 Marks)
4. A worker’s monthly salary is Ksh 12,000. After a deduction of income tax, he receives
Ksh 9,500. Determine the income tax as a fraction of the gross income.
(2 Marks)
5. Make V the subject of the formula. (4 Marks)

6. A right-angle triangle has the hypotenuse equal to 17cm and its base 8cm. Determine
the size of the smallest angle. (4 Marks)

7. The roots of a quadratic equation are 3 and -2. Determine the equation. (4 Marks)

8. The length of a hollow cylindrical pipe is 6 meters. If the external diameter is 11cm and
has a thickness 1cm. Calculate the volume in cm3 of the material used to make the pipe.
(Take 𝜋 as 3.142). (4 Marks)
9. During a certain period, the exchange rates are as follows;
1 Sterling pound = Ksh 102
1 Sterling pound = Ksh 1.7 US dollar
1 US dollar = Ksh 60.6
A school management intended to import textbooks worth Ksh 500,000 from UK. It
changed money to Sterling pounds. Later the management found out that books were
cheaper in U.S.A. Hence it changed the Sterling pounds to dollars. Unfortunately, a
financial crisis arose and money had to be converted to Kenyan Shillings. Calculate
the amount of money the management ended up with in Ksh. (4 Marks)

11. Akinyi, Bundi, Grace and Diba invested some money in business in the ratio of
7:9:10:14 respectively. The business realised a profit of Ksh 46,800. They shared 12%
of the profit equally and the remainder in the ratio of their contributions. Calculate the
total amount of money received by Diba. (4 Marks)

Answer any THREE questions from this section.
12. The following distributions show the masses to the nearest Kg of 65 animals in a
certain farm.

information. (10 Marks)
b. Use your graph to find;
i. Median mass;
ii. Quadratic deviation;
iii. Percentage of animals whose mass is at least 42 Kg. (10 Marks)

a. Complete the table below given that 𝑦 = 2 sin 2𝑥 and 𝑦 = 3 cos(𝑥 + 45°)

d. Use the graphs to solve the equation 2sin 2x − 3cos(𝑥 + 45°) = 0 for
0° ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 180°. (3 Marks)
14.
a. Using the grid provided draw the graph of 𝑦 = −2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 8 for values of x
between -3 and 4. (14 Marks)
b. From your graph find the roots of the equation −2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 8 = 0. (3 Marks)
c. By drawing a suitable straight line on the same axes, find the roots of the
equation−2𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 = −12. (3 Marks)

15. The figure below shows a solid frustrum of a right circular cave. The frustrum has
cylindrical hole of diameter 5cm drilled through. The other dimensions are as shown.

Calculate the volume of the material making the solid given that the radius of the cone at top
is 10cm. (Take 𝜋 = 3.142). (20 Marks)
