Monitors: Screen Descriptions

• Screen size: measured as a diagonal line across the

screen from corner to opposite corner.
• Pixels: (or picture element) dots that make up the image
on your screen.
• Resolution: the number of pixels displayed on the screen
(the higher the resolution, the closer together the dots)
• Dot pitch: is the distance between the centers of a pair
of like-colored pixels.
• Refresh rate: the speed with which a monitor redraws
the image of the screen and is measured in hertz.
Softcopy Devices: Speakers

• A speaker is a device that produces

computer output as sound.
• Speakers are common devices in computer
systems.
Examples include:
• Built-in speaker
• Two-device set speakers
• Surround sound speakers
Hardcopy Devices: Printers

• Inkjet Printer
• Makes images by forcing droplets through
nozzles.
• Top speed is 07 pages per minute.

• Laser Printer
• Forms images using an electrostatic
process.
• Prints more than 30 pages per minute at
the top speed.
Printers

• Resolution of a printer is the number of dots per inch

(dpi) it produces.
• Higher the resolution, better the image, and usually
the more costly the printer.
Printers

• Multifunction printer:
• Scan, copy, fax, and print.
• Can be either inkjet or laser.
• Cost less than buying individual units.
• Take up less desk space.
Storage Devices

• Storage device stores information to be recalled and

used at a later time.
Storage Terms

Byte = 8 bits
Kilobyte (KB) ≈ 1 Thousand Bytes
Megabytes (MB) ≈ 1 Million Bytes
Gigabytes (GB) ≈ 1 Billion Bytes

Storage
Storage Devices

Primary Storage;
• Also known as main storage or memory, is the main
area in a computer in which data is stored for quick
access by the computer's processor.
• Primary storage is fast and expensive as compared to
secondary storage.

Secondary Storage;
• Alternatively referred to as external memory, secondary
memory, and auxiliary storage.
• A secondary storage device is a non-volatile device that
holds data until it is deleted or overwritten.
Primary Storage
ROM
• Read-only memory is a type of non-volatile memory
used in computers and other electronic devices. Data
stored in ROM cannot be electronically modified after
the manufacture of the memory device.
RAM
• Random-access memory is a form of computer memory
that can be read and changed in any order, typically
used to store working data and machine code.
Secondary Storage Devices

Three major technology types for information storage:

• Magnetic (Magnetic tape, Floppy disks and Hard

disk drives etc.)

• Optical or laser (CDs & DVDs)

• Solid State(Pen Drives, Memory cards)
