Magnesium is a vital element found in the earth’s crust. Answer the following questions about Mg.
(a) A chemistry student obtains a 23.6 g sample of MgCO3 (molar mass 84.31 g∙mol-1), commonly found in
nature as the mineral magnesite. Determine the number of moles of MgCO3 in the sample.
(c) Below is an incomplete photoelectron spectroscopy diagram for magnesium. Sketch the peak that is
missing in this diagram.
(d) The student compares the radius of the Mg atom with the Mg2+ ion and notices that the Mg atom has a
radius of 160 pm, while the Mg2+ cation has a radius of only 78 pm. Explain why the Mg2+ cation is so
much smaller than the Mg atom.
(e) The student wants to find a compound that is similar chemically to MgCO3. Of the four compounds
listed below, circle the one that is most similar chemically to MgCO3.
(g) The student has a vial containing a mixture of powdered aluminum and powdered zinc. The total mass
of the mixture is 1.635 g.
i. If it is determined that the mixture contains 0.0352 mol of Al, determine the percentage by mass of
the mixture occupied by Al metal.
(h) The student compares the ionization energies of Al and Ga. Explain why the ionization energy of Ga is
lower than that of Al.
(i) The student investigates a pure sample of yet another element, and analyzes the element using a mass
spectrometer. The following graph is generated:
Use the data shown here to calculate the average atomic mass of the unknown element and identify the
element.
