Decide whether the data collection technique consists of a survey, an observational study, or an experiment. If an
experiment is used, identify the treatments used and what is being measured. Then state one potential source of
bias; if you cannot identify a source of bias, explain why.

1. Nick stood outside a movie theater and asked many of the patrons if the movie they saw was good.

5. Erianna is designing a survey to determine how much sleep the students in her school get. Here are three
versions of a question she may include in her survey. Which is the best and why?

b. How many hours of sleep did you get last night?
c. How many total hours of sleep did you get in the last week?

6. Darita’s government class plans to conduct a poll to determine which political candidate has the most support
in an upcoming election. They decide to place phone calls to the fourth name in the second column of every
page of the local book. What problems, if any, do you see in their plan? Explain.
7. For each scenario, decide which of the three types of data collection you would use, give a reason for the choice,
and give your design for the study.

a. You wish to find which brand of microwave popcorn has the fewest unpopped kernels.

b. You wish to find if there is a connection between sunny days and people’s moods.

c. You wish to find the proportion of students at your school who are planning to attend the school play two weeks
from now.
