CHAPTER: 3
Background of Study and Literature Review
3.1 Background of Study
UI/UX design play a crucial role in shaping digital experiences, blending
creativity and functionality to engage users and achieve business goals. The field
encompasses various disciplines, including visual design, interaction design, and
user experience research. Effective design is not just about aesthetics—it focuses
on creating user-centric solutions that are visually appealing, easy to use, and
aligned with client objectives.
With the growing demand for seamless and intuitive user experiences, UI/UX
design has become increasingly important. It emphasizes user research,
wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing to create solutions that meet user
expectations. Tools such as Adobe XD, Figma, and WordPress enable designers to
translate ideas into functional digital experiences. By integrating graphic design
and UI/UX practices, organizations can ensure that their digital presence is both
engaging and effective.
11
3.2 Literature Review
A study by Norman and Nielsen (2021) highlights the critical role of user research
and usability testing in improving user satisfaction and product adoption. They
found that websites with well-designed interfaces and intuitive navigation increase
user retention rates by up to 50%. This research supports the growing emphasis on
creating seamless user experiences through iterative design processes and
usability testing.
In the realm of graphic design, Wong (2020) underlines the impact of visual
storytelling in brand communication. He suggests that cohesive visual identities—
encompassing logos, color schemes, and typography—help businesses build trust
and recognition among their target audiences. Moreover, the integration of motion
graphics and interactive elements has been shown to improve audience
engagement in digital marketing campaigns (Taylor, 2023).
WordPress and other content management systems (CMS) have also been widely
studied for their role in democratizing web development. According to a report by
CMS Insights (2022), 43% of all websites on the internet are powered by
WordPress, owing to its flexibility and user-friendly interface. Research indicates
that adopting CMS platforms allows designers and businesses to develop
responsive websites quickly and efficiently, ensuring a consistent user experience
across devices (CMS Insights, 2022).

4.3 Description of the project involved.
Project Title: Himavan Digital Experience Redesign
During my internship at Himavan Nepal, I was actively involved in a comprehensive
UI/UX enhancement project aimed at improving the organization’s digital platforms
and online presence. The project was supervised by the IT department under Ikigai
Tech and focused on optimizing the user experience across Himavan's website and
social media channels.
The primary objective of the project was to redesign the existing website to make it
more intuitive, accessible, and visually appealing. My role included conducting UX
audits, identifying areas for improvement, and proposing design solutions aligned
with current trends and user needs. I worked on wireframes, prototypes, and high-
fidelity mockups using tools like Figma, ensuring responsiveness and consistency
across devices.
In addition, I contributed to the creation of visual assets for marketing campaigns,
event promotions, and social media engagement. I also collaborated with developers
to implement and test UI changes, as well as with the marketing team to ensure visual
coherence and support campaign goals.
This project not only strengthened my technical skills in design, prototyping, and
content creation, but also gave me hands-on experience with cross-functional
collaboration, design thinking, and user research. It allowed me to see the direct
impact of design decisions on user interaction and organizational branding.
18
4.4 Tasks/Activities Performed
The different task was assigned during my three month of internship:
Onboarding & Setup:
I familiarized myself with the company’s design workflow, tools, and branding
guidelines. I set up platforms such as Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and WordPress,
and reviewed past projects to understand the company’s design direction and
expectations.
Graphic Design & Branding:
I designed visual assets including logos, social media posts, banners, and marketing
materials that aligned with the company’s branding. These designs supported various
campaigns and helped maintain consistency across digital platforms.
UI/UX Design & Prototyping:
I created wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes for both web and mobile
platforms using Figma. My focus was on delivering clean, user-friendly interfaces
that improved usability and met project objectives.
Web Design & Development:
I customized WordPress themes to create responsive and visually appealing web
pages. I focused on layout optimization, cross-device compatibility, and improving
overall user interface consistency throughout the website.
Team Collaboration:
I worked closely with developers to ensure that designs were implemented accurately
and efficiently. I also coordinated with the marketing team to align design elements
with campaign goals and participated in regular meetings for feedback and project
updates.
User Research & Testing:
I conducted basic user research by collecting feedback from internal users and
potential audiences to understand their pain points and preferences. I also participated
in usability testing sessions to observe how users interacted with the platform. Based
on these insights, I proposed design improvements to address usability issues and
enhance the overall user experience.
