General Instructions:

i. The question paper comprises of five sections – A, B, C, D and E.


ii. All questions are compulsory.
iii. Internal choice is given in sections B, C, D and E.
iv. Question numbers 1 and 2 in Section-A are one mark question. They are to be
answered in one word or in one sentence.
v. Question numbers 3 to 5 in Section- B are two marks questions. These are to be
answered in about 30 words each.
vi. Question numbers 6 to 15 in Section-C are three marks questions. These are to be
answered in about 50 words each.
vii. Question numbers 16 to 21 in Section-D are 5 marks questions. These are to be
answered in 70 words each.
viii. Question numbers 22 to 27 in Section- E are based on practical skills. Each question
is a two marks question. These are to be answered in brief.
SECTION – A

1 In a bisexual flower inspite of the young stamens being removed artificially, the flower 1
produces fruit. Why?

2 Why is the inner wall of alimentary canal not digested although the digestive enzymes can 1
digest all the materials that make the cells?
SECTION – B
3 Na, Mg and Al are the elements of the third period of the modern periodic table having 2
group number 1, 2 and 13 respectively. Which one of these elements has the :
(i) Highest valency
(ii) Maximum chemical reactivity

4 ‘A concave mirror of focal length 15 cm can form a magnified erect as well as inverted 2
image of an object placed in front of it.’ Justify this statement stating the position of the
object with respect to the pole of the mirror in both cases for obtaining the images.

Which one of the two has higher resistivity? Justify.


5 ‘An individual cannot pass on to its progeny the experiences of his life time’. Justify the 2

6 (i) Nichrome wire of length L and radius R has resistance of 10Ω. How would the 3
resistance of the wire change when :
(a) only length of the wire is doubled?
(b) only diameter of the wire is doubled? Justify your answer.
(ii) Why are electric bulbs filled with chemically inactive nitrogen or argon?

electric heating device and why?
8 (i) Name the substance used for white washing. 3
(ii) Walls get a shiny finish after two to three days of white washing. Give reasons.
(iii) Write the relevant equation for the above reaction.
9 (i) Predict the products of the reaction and write balanced chemical equation for the 3
following word equations:
(i) Manganese dioxide is heated with aluminium powder
(ii) Zinc oxide is reacted with sodium hydroxide solution
(iii) Reaction of sodium metal with ethanol

(i) What happens when electricity is passed through ‘brine’? Name the process.
(ii) Name the substance formed at cathode and anode during the above reaction and
write the balanced chemical equation.

10 Leaves of a healthy potted plant were coated with Vaseline to block the stomata. Will this 3
plant remain healthy for long? State three reasons for your answer.

Plants absorb water from the soil. How does this water reach the tree tops? Explain in
detail.

11 A blue colour flower plant denoted by BB is crossbred with that of white colour flower plant 3
denoted by bb.
(i) State the colour of flower you would expect in the F1 generation plants.
(ii) If flowers of F1 are self-pollinated, what would be the percentage of white flower
plants in F2 generation,
(iii) State the expected phenotypic ratio with the help of Punnett’s square.

12 The image of a candle flame placed at a distance of 45 cm from a spherical lens is formed 3
on a screen placed at a distance of 90 cm from the lens.
(a) Identify the type of lens.
(b) Calculate its focal length.
(c ) If the height of the flame is 2cm, find the height of the image.

(i) ‘The refractive index of diamond is 2.42’. What is the meaning of this statement?
(ii) A student focused the image of a candle flame on a white screen by placing the
flame at various distances from a convex lens. He noted his observations as:

sufficient number of sticks. In how many ways one can join the models of six carbon atoms
and fourteen hydrogen atoms to form different molecules of C6H14.
14 A 2 kW heater, a 200W TV and three 100W lamps are all switched on from 6pm to 10 pm. 3
What is the total cost of running these devices in the month of December at a rate of
Rs. 5.50 per kWh?
15 (i) Explain the role of placenta in the development of human embryo. 3
(ii) Prenatal sex determination has been prohibited by law. State the necessity of
enforcement of this law.

16 (i) It is necessary to connect an earth wire to electric appliances having metallic covers. 5
Why? How will you identify earth wire in household circuit?
(ii) A coil of insulated copper wire is connected to a galvanometer. What would happen
if a bar magnet is:
(a) pushed into the coil?
(b) held stationary inside the coil?
(iii) A circuit has a line of 5A. How many lamps of rating 40 W; 220 V can simultaneously
run on this line safely?

A student fixes a sheet of white paper on a drawing board. He places a bar magnet in the
centre of it and sprinkles some iron fillings uniformly around the bar magnet. Then he taps
the board gently and observes that the iron fillings arrange themselves in a particular
pattern.
(a) Why do the iron fillings arrange in a specific pattern?
(b) What does the lines along which the iron fillings align represent?
(c) What does the crowding of iron fillings at the end of the magnet indicate?
(d) State how the strength of the magnetic field is indicated in this experiment?
17 (i) Draw the electron dot structure of the simplest alkyne. 5
(ii) Write down the following conversion with suitable chemical equation.
(a) Ethanol to an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
(b) Ethanol to Ethanoic acid.
(c) Ethene to ethane.
(iii) What do you mean by denatured alcohol?

(i) State two characteristic features of carbon which when put together give rise to large
number of carbon compounds.
(ii) (a) An organic compound A is an essential constituent of wine. Oxidation of A gives
an organic acid B which is present in vinegar. Name the compounds A and B and
write their structural formula.
(b) What happens when A and B reacts in the presence of an acid catalyst? Write
the chemical equation of the reaction.
18 (i) Draw neat diagram of human brain and label the following parts on it: 5
(a) Cerebrum (b) Mid-brain (c) Cerebellum (d) Pituitary gland.
(ii) Why pancreas is called a dual function gland?

a) Draw a diagram of human heart and label the following:
i) The chamber of heart that receives oxygenated blood.
ii) The largest artery in the body.
iii) The blood vessel that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to heart.
iv) The blood vessel which brings the deoxygenated blood to the heart.
b) What is lymph and why is it important in our body?

19 (i) Give reasons for the following: 5
(a) No rainbow could be observed from the surface of the moon by the astronauts.
What would be the possible reason?
(b)Why do we observe random wavering or flicking of the objects near a fire or on a
very hot day?
(ii) A person needs a lens of power – 4.5 D for correction of his vision.
(a) What kind of defect in vision is he suffering from?
(b) What is the focal length of the corrective lens?
(c) What is the nature of the corrective lens?

20 (i) Grey colored metal ‘X’ is used in making dry cell. It is also used for coating iron 5
metal to prevent it from rusting. When granules of ‘X’ are added to blue solution of
compound of a reddish brown metal ‘Y’, the color of the solution gets discharged and
metal ‘Y’ is formed. Identify ’X’ and ‘Y’. Write the chemical reaction and identify the
type of reaction.
(ii) Royal water is prepared by mixing two acids ‘A’ and ‘B’. It can dissolve gold and
platinum. It is highly corrosive and fuming liquid. Identify ‘A’ and ‘B’. What is the ratio
in which ‘A’ and ‘B’ are mixed?
(iii) Can all minerals of a metal act as ores? Justify

21 (i) A farmer cultivates carrot in the field. 5


(a) Make a possible food chain with four trophic levels that may develop there.
(b) What is the relation between the energy received by the third trophic level and
energy stored in the second trophic level?
(ii) Arbari village of West Bengal is known to be a good example of conserved forest.
Justify your answer.

SECTION - E
22 Name the gases evolved when ethanoic acid is added to sodium carbonate. How would 2
you prove the presence of this gas?
(OR)
A sample of water with soap solution was tested. Students observed that soap solution
lathers freely. What will be the observation if a spoon full of common salt is added to water
and then tested with soap solution? Justify with reason.

23 A student added few pieces of aluminium metal to two test tubes A and B containing 2
aqueous solutions of iron sulphate and copper sulphate. In the second part of her
experiment, she added iron metal to another test tubes C and D containing aqueous
solutions of aluminium sulphate and copper sulphate.
In which test tube or test tubes will she observe colour change ? On the basis of this
experiment, state which one is the most reactive metal and why.

24 A student draws the diagram of a dicot seed to show the different parts of its embryo. He 2
has marked its parts as A, B, C and D.

Name the parts marked A, B, C and D respectively

25 Ravi removed a peel from the lower surface of a Petunia leaf and prepared a temporary 2
mount of the peel on a slide. He then observed the leaf peel under the compound
microscope and found out one part has an elliptical pore and the other kidney shaped.
(a) Name these parts.
(b) Why did Ravi remove the peel from the lower surface of the leaf?

What would happen if:


(a) KOH solution is not hung in conical flask during experiment to prove carbon dioxide
is essential for photosynthesis?
(b) Seeds are not kept moist during the experiment?

26 (i) Why do parallel rays of different colours deviate differently while passing through a 2
glass prism?
(ii) Name any two phenomenon associated with the formation of a rainbow.

27 Two metallic wires A and B of the same material are connected in parallel. Wire A has 2
length l and radius r ,wire B has a length 2 l and radius 2 r .Calculate the ratio of the
equivalent resistance in parallel combination and the resistance of wire A.

Draw an electric circuit to study the relationship between potential difference maintained
between the points “X” and “Y” of a Nichrome wire and the electric current flowing through
XY. Label the circuit components used to measure electric current and potential difference.
