COURSE CODE: CE 372

COURSE NAME: QUANTITY SURVEYING & COST ESTIMATION
CREDIT HOURS: 3 (theory) + 0 (practical) = 3
CONTACT HOURS: 48 (theory) + 0 (practical) = 48
PREREQUISITES: Nil
MODE OF TEACHING: Lectures, Software Demonstrations and Problem Solving Activities

INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE:

This course is designed to provide an overview of the Building construction management and in
depth working of quantity and cost estimation. On successful completion, students will be able to
prepare plans for building construction applying the learnt techniques; Perform basic,
intermediate and advanced building construction measurements, compute quantities and cost
from relevant drawing and schedule of rates using standard engineering methods; Prepare bill of
quantities for project estimation, prepare store requirements for procurement and incorporation in
work and prepare and analyse tendering, deviation orders and interim and final payment
certificates.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
This is an under-graduate level course intended to provide students an overall picture of building
construction management, detailed quantity and cost estimation, preparation of BOQs and
payment certificates. It seeks to equip the student with the requisite analytical tools needed to
carry out the tasks encountered at the various phases of the building construction. The objectives
of the course are:-
 Study the role of estimating in construction contract administration.
 Types of estimates. Unit costs and production rates; job costs.
 Checking quantity take-off and cost estimating in selected divisions using a computer
package.
 Controlling cost on projects using management methods.
 Preparing bid for complete building project using manual methods and the CSI format;

RELEVANT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs):

The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLOs:

Engineering Knowledge: ☐ 7 Environment and Sustainability: ☐

Problem Analysis: ☐ 8 Ethics: ☐
Design/Development of Solutions: ☐ 9 Individual and Team Work: ☐
Investigation: ☐ 10 Communication: ☐
Modern Tool Usage: ☑ 11 Project Management: ☑
The Engineer and Society: ☐ 12 Lifelong Learning: ☐
RELEVANCE OF COURSE TO REAL LIFE (PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS):
Every civil engineering project requires proper quantity and cost estimation and skills to control
costs, which cannot be achieved without having requisite knowledge, skills and techniques. This
subject will give sufficient knowledge of quantity and cost estimation of all the elements of a
construction project so that students can apply them while handling practical projects in the field.

ATTENDANCE:
Regular attendance is expected and minimum 75% attendance is required to qualify and earn the
course credit. Poor attendance will affect the final grade of students. Medical (illness) and
professional absences (or official commitments) are accepted. In all cases the student should
notify the instructor of any planned absences before that class if at all possible and obtain class
notes from another.
