Abstraction

Now, Lets go to the world of Public

Speaking, first let’s identify the The two (2)
General Factors of Public Speaking.

1. Nonverbal signals – communicating

without words.
Here are some nonverbal signals that can
improve how you communicate:

a. Eye Contact – Look directly into the eyes

of as many members of the audience as you
can. Eye contact communicates honesty and
sincerity. It makes the audience feel as if you
are speaking with them rather than to them.

b. Facial Expression – expressions, such as

smiling, frowning, raising an eye-brow, and
so on- can reveal your feelings and add to or
even take place of a verbal message.

c Gesture – making relaxed and natural

gestures with your head, hands, or arms as
you speak emphasizes verbal messages.
Nodding the head for “eyes” or shaking it for
“no” or pointing with the index finger can
effectively punctuate your speech.
d. Posture – stand up straight and look alert
to communicate an air of confidence to your
audience. Yes Ma’am

We are now halfway to our learning journey.

Are you still with me?

2. Verbal signals – the expressiveness of

your voice is a major in the effectiveness of
your speech. The following verbal signals
will help you communicate your message to
an audience:

a. Diction (clarity of your pronunciation) –

always speak clearly so that your listeners
can understand you.

b. Emphasis (stress put on a word or

phrase)–emphasize key ideas or points in
your speech or points in your speech by
saying those words a little more loudly.

c. Pause (small silences in your speech) – use

pauses to help listeners catch up to suggest
that what you have said or are about to say is
important.

d. Pitch (how your voice sounds) – when

speakers are nervous, the pitch in their voices
tends to become higher. Take a deep breath
and relax before you speak to keep your
voice’s pitch at its most natural.
e. Rate (the speed with which you talk) –
normal speed is about 120 to 160 words per
minute. When delivering a speech, speak at a
slower rate.

f. Volume (the level of sound you create) –

when giving a speech, speak more loudly
than usual. Be sure to ask listeners if they
can hear you before you begin your speech.
Yes, Ma’am.

Did you Understand class?

Application
In order to check your understanding of the
lesson, let’s have an activity. Picture prompt
speech.

Instructions:

Each students is assigned one picture

randomly. They are given 1 minute to think
what they want to say about the picture. After
the preparation time, they speak for 30
seconds to describe the picture or share a
story inspired of it.

Yes, Ma’am.

Do you understand?

(The student do as told)

Great job, Class! You all did well.
