1 Hello, everyone!

There is one week left, and our course will come to an end.

4 Please read these statements and decide if they are TRUE or FALSE.

1. Public speaking is effective if you speak quickly to keep the audience

engaged.

FALSE (Speaking too quickly can make it difficult for the audience to
follow and get your message. Your delivery should be clear and well-
paced.)

and maintaining engagement.

TRUE (Eye contact also shows your confidence.)

helps ensure clarity and flow.

important points.

or more than that. Besides, your voice will sound unnatural. If)

5. Using visual aids can enhance understanding, but they should be the
main focus of your presentation.

FALSE (Too much visual aids can be distracting to your audience)

5 Next, you will fill in each blank with ONE suitable word. You can pause this
video clip to think about the answers.

Alright, let’s check the answers together.

enthusiasm, and emphasis
7. Knowing your ____ audience ______is crucial to tailoring your

by presenting evidence to support their argument.
10. An effective speaker’s ____ persona ____is one that aligns with
their true personality.

Well-done, everyone!

6 Now, I’d like to draw your attention to these aspects.

Ethics, Free Speech, & Credibility

As you know, everyone has the right to speak. Moreover, we all have the
responsibility to speak ethically. Ethical considerations should guide every
step of the public speaking process.

An ethical speaker is the one who

- has a clear, responsible goal, (a socially responsible goal conveys respect

and offers the listener choices)
- uses sound evidence and reasoning, (by using critical-thinking skills such
as analysis and evaluation to formulate arguments and draw conclusions.)
- is sensitive to and tolerant of differences, (being aware as possible of
others’ feelings, needs, interests, and backgrounds)

- acts honestly, (Knowingly offering false or misleading information to an

audience is an ethical violation)
- avoids plagiarism. (give credit for ideas and information that are not their
own)

7 Here is a general checklist of a public speech.

- Know Your Audience

- Have Clear Purpose and Message

- Strong Opening

- Organized Structure

- Engage with Stories or Examples

- Maintain Audience Interaction

- Rehearse and Time Your Speech

- Deliver Confidently
8 You also should have a checklist for your final speaking test in this course.

- Check the test date.

- Check the test format. How many examiners and students are there
in one exam? How much time do you have for your presentation?
How are you supposed to interact with your partner?

- Check the specific requirements of the test task. Please go to the

description of the final test task for further details.

- Review the lessons and prepare the test task.

- Be ready and confidently perform the test task.

9 According to each occasion, a checklist should be tailored so that your

speech will meet the objectives, requirements, and expectations.

10 I would like to share with you some reflections of Indonesian students in a

study about public speaking skill. They have something in common with
Vietnamese students.

1. “I am confident to speak in English in public based on the experience

I have had so far. It trained me. I have a goal to become a teacher,
and I always dare to move forward, but I have to prepare in advance
no matter how small the preparation will be.”

Student 1 can make use of his or her experience and have a clear goal to
become a teacher, which definitely requires public speaking skill.

Meanwhile, student 2 emphasizes the sources of his or her confidence. It

comes from himself or herself first.

2. “I said to myself, like let's do it and prayed a lot. I think it's important
because I need support from myself and others, but the most important thing
is support from myself. If I am confident, I am sure that it will run
smoothly.”

11 Student 3 mentioned anxiety. It can happen to anyone of us, but it will be

alright with our good preparation and practice.

3. “Yes, I often felt anxiety and overthinking a few days before the
performance. What I did was prepare the material as best as I can.”
4. “I got feedback from my friends like I was too fast in delivering
materials, and I looked nervous. I use this feedback to reflect on
myself so that future performances don't happen again.”

Student 4 showed his or her reflection based on feedback and made attempts
for future improvement.

I guess you also have more reflections during the course. The end of the
course will not stop you from perfecting your public speaking skill. It will be
a life-long learning process. You will keep learning from your experience
and other speakers.

12 This quotation will be a message to wrap up our lesson today.

Please remember your audience may forget what you said, but they will
never forget how you made them feel.

13 You can do your own research to know more about several aspects and
examples related to public speaking. Our lessons have given you some ideas
to start with.

14 So that’s all for the course “Public Speaking”.

Thank you and best wishes to you!
