The Inventory
In order to move beyond the ego mind, we need to come to an
understanding of it, and its mechanisms. To do this, we take an inventory
of the ego mind by taking pen to paper. It begins by listing resentments,
and will consist of five columns.
In column four we list how we react to the feelings in the third column.
Going back to the example, my anger at my brother's controlling behavior
makes me rebellious in my actions, causes me to treat him in a mean
manner, and causes me to ignore him when he gives suggestions.
For column five, focus on each aspect of the previous four columns,
then ask yourself what, at the core of the resentment, is the fear from
which it springs. Here are six core fears, but do not limit your exploration
to these.
The six core fears are: 1) fear of not being good enough or less than 2)
fear of not belonging or not fitting in 3) fear of being found out 4) fear of
not getting what I think I want 5) fear of losing what I think I have 6) fear of
the unknown.
Mindfulness
Now we build the mechanisms of a mindfulness practice. Having had a
glimpse into the fear-based thought system which makes up the ego mind,
we watch for it, and as it surfaces we introduce the practice of non-
attachment non-aversion. We do this by finding the middle ground of
willingness. We don't fight the ego or push it away, nor do not latch onto
the things we discovered in the inventory. We allow them to rise as they
may and become willing to release them. If on some aspects we lack the
willingness, we pray for the willingness.
Many times we latch onto even the negative aspects of the fear-based
thought system as it is what makes up the ego mind, which may feel it is
losing its identity as these things are released. But we are replacing it with
something better. So tell the ego that it is going to be OK, send it love, and
find the state of release which is willingness. By doing this, we are
building the mental framework to be in the world, but not of the world.
The next part of this program is to “Seek through prayer and meditation
to improve conscious contact with God as you understand Him, praying
only for knowledge of His will, and the power to carry that out.” There are
a lot of different aspects to this phase, and when “practiced” properly it
has no ending.
If you find that trying to govern your universe and life is exhausting,
then let go. Listen on the inside to your divine intuition, and obey it.
How? Just do what seems the appropriate thing to do in each moment.
And do whatever feels peaceful. Remember:
With inner quietness and confidence, you will always find strength. [W]
If you focus continuously on your all-loving, all-providing
spiritual Vibration within, you will stay in touch with bliss.
If you permeate your awareness with the graceful power of ‘I Am One’
you will see Divine Grace manifest throughout your life by its guidance
of you. Go within yourself daily to feel your oneness with Divine Being and
obey God’s leading from there.
Let your heart-centered feelings regarding each moment of the day
and each activity, be your GUIDE as to the appropriateness of your
thoughts and deeds.
If your heart remains peaceful before and during an activity,
instead of anxious, then you do well.
Trust that your life is actually being guided, and it will be.
Practice friendship with the Divine by listening to divine leadings.
‘Acknowledge God in all your ways so God will direct your Paths in bliss.’
[F]
‘He shall keep him in perfect peace whose mind, thoughts and imagination
are stayed on Him’ [V]
Look within all day long as you look without,
and your Divine heart leading will direct your steps.
Follow your feelings moment-to-moment and let blissfulness be the guide.
By doing this, your heart shall rest in peaceful oneness, and your mind
shall be filled with lighted Awareness.
It is .. a continual dedication.
Meditation
We are seeking improved contact with the mind of God, and when taken
as one, prayer and meditation form an amazing dynamic. This involves
opening channels of the mind to receive, not broadcast, thus the next
aspect “praying only for knowledge of His will for us...” What this really
does is move us further into releasing our false identity, which has its own
designs and plans, and accepting our true nature and our oneness with
the Creator.
“Praying only for knowledge of His will for us...” Seeking only oneness,
and to have our mind enlightened by the Divine plan. Moving beyond
operating from the ego mind into the connected Self. “And the power to
carry” out the will of God. We are praying to become the instruments of
God's will. God's Agents.
The word “spirit” comes from the Latin word "spiritus" which means
"breath". The Holy Spirit is the breath of God, it is God's movement and
rest with/in us.
Here now, we include a prayer for the invocation of the Holy Spirit. We
invite the presence and action of the Holy Spirit into our mind and our
experience. This will be followed by a mediation for activation of the Holy
Spirit with/in our presence.
Bring the focus of the mind to the breath. Connect with the breath and
observe it as it moves into the body and fills the lungs. Try not to make
this a forced focus, simply allow the mind to synchronize with the breath.
We want to now connect the mind and breath with the body. Send your
awareness down to your feet. Breath into the feet, connect with the feet on
the in-breath, and release with the out-breath. Move now to the calves,
connect into the calves with the inhale, release with the exhale. Now to the
thighs, breathing in and connecting, releasing as you breath out.
Now to the upper body. Connect into the torso as you breath in, allow
the focus to release as the breath flows out. Into the chest and shoulders,
connect as your breath flows in, release as the breath flows out. To the
upper arms now, allow the mind to connect as you inhale into that area,
and release as you release the breath. To the forearms and the hands,
connecting... and releasing.
Bring your focus now to the head and neck, connect in as the breath
flows here, and release with the exhale. Now you are just the breath.
Bring your awareness now to the heart chakra. This is the body’s
central energy field, residing in the heart/upper chest area. Allow your
awareness to move into this energy center. Breathe into this energy center
and feel the expansive awareness. Here the breath merges into this energy
field, moving out from the body, yet still centered in the heart.
Spend some time here. Feel and sense the energy field of the
head/brain attuning to the expansive awareness of the heart center. With
each breath allow your awareness to expand, within, and beyond the body.
This is the gateway into the expanded awareness of the Higher Mind and
the coherent state. The more time you spend with the practice of this
synchronized awareness, the more this will become your natural state of
being.
As you are ready, bring your awareness back to the body, breathing into
and merging with the physical form, yet still aware of your expanded state.
Centering Prayer
Thomas Keating's centering prayer is the next step in merging and
incorporating our mind with the Divine mind. In this practice we choose a
code-word as a signal to Divine Mind that we are welcoming it in to our
meditational prayer space. We then go into our prayer closet and lock the
door to the ego mind's thought forms, focusing only on maintaining an
open space for Divine Mind to enter. If we find our awareness focusing on
the thought stream, we use our code word, then gently bring our focus
back to open space and the Presence of Divine Mind.
With practice, we can make our lives a state of prayer and meditation.
This program gives us the action items to make this a reality. We have
built the framework for moving beyond the reactionary nature of the ego
based thought-forms into responding from our Higher awareness. We
practice mindfulness by immersing ourself in Presence. When we feel
ourself drifting from the coherent space, we use our map to trace the
divergence to whatever fear may be involved, and become willing to
release it. As we reach the state of willingness, we turn to the next step.
We use the breath to center our awareness into the heart space. As we
release our focus on the fear, we breathe into the heart chakra. We merge
our thought process into the energetic presence there. We use our code
word to invite in the Presence of Divine mind, and we pause to listen for
leadings from our feeling nature. This is heart-mind coherence.
