A train takes 20 sec to cross a lamp post and 30 sec
to cross a rail platform. If the speed of the train is
36 km/hr, find the length of the platform.

a. 200 m
b. 150 m Convert speed into m/s by multiplying by 5/18.
c. 100 m
Speed of train is thus 10m/s
d. 50 m
In 20 sec it travels 20 x 10 = 200m - length of train

In 30 sec it travels 30 x 10 = 300m - length of train plus

that of the platform. So platform length is
300 – 200 = 100m

A man walks up an escalator (going up) @ 1 step/sec.

cover, if the escalator is not moving ?
Man takes 50 secs to reach the top.
a. 80 Let speed of moving escalator be v steps /sec
b. 100 Then moving up
c. 120 50 + 50 v = L ( length of escalator in terms of steps )
d. 160
Moving down man takes 125/5 = 25 secs, thus

125- 25v = L ( length of escalator in terms of steps )

Solving v = 1. so total no of steps is

50 + 50 x 1 = 100
Two cars A and B start a race on a circular track of
1200m moving in the same direction. A’s speed is 25 m/s
and B’s speed is 10 m/s.

1. When and where on the track shall they meet for the
first time?

2. At how many points shall they be meeting on the

track?

a. 2 b. 3 c. 4 d. 5
A 25 m/s
1.
B 10 m/s Relative speed is 25 – 10 = 15m/s
So first time they shall meet will
be after 1200/15 secs = 80 secs.
1/S In 80 secs B travels 800m from the
start & that’s where they meet 1st
time

2.
3 The speed ratio is 25 : 10
2
Simplified Ratio is 5 : 2
So No. of meeting points
When moving in same direction is
5–2 = 3

Track Length = 1200 m When moving in opposite direction is

5+ 2 = 7
Three cars A, B and C have respective speeds of
30km/h, 40km/h and 60km/h. Car B starts two
hours after A leaves and then after some time Car
C leaves. Car B and Car C catch up with Car A at
the same time,
After what time does Car C start after Car A
leaves. ?

a. 3 hrs b. 4 hrs c. 4.5 hrs d. 5hrs

a. 3 hrs b. 4 hrs c. 4.5 hrs d. 5hrs

Lets assume distance to be 120 km then time ratio of the cars is

A B C
4 3 2 difference of time between A and B is 4 – 3 = 1hr

So 8 6 4 ratio gives A – B = 2. Thus A - C = 8 – 4 = 4

A bus travels at a speed of 54km/h and reaches

A bus travels at a speed of 54km/h and reaches
destination 90 km away in 2 hours. What is the
stoppage time of the bus during the journey ?

a. 12min
b. 15min
c. 18min
d. 20min The bus travels effectively 45 km in 1 hr.
So it covers this distance in 45/ 54 hr = 5/6 hr = 50 min
So in 1 hr it travels for 50 mins and stops for 10 mins.

Thus in 2 hours it stops for 2 x 10 = 20 mins

opposite direction at the same speed. When it reaches
the faster train, it turns around and so on. Bird keeps

collide, how far will the bird have flown ?

A thief escaped from police custody. He ran away at a speed of
15m/s .The police realized after 20secs and started chasing him in
the same direction at 20 m/s. The police had a dog which could run
at 30 m/s. The dog would run to the thief and then return to the
police and then would turn back towards the thief and it kept doing
so till the police caught the thief.
Find
a. The total distance travelled by the dog?
b. The distance travelled by the dog in the direction of thief ?
c. The distance travelled by dog in the direction of police ?
In 20 sec the thief travels 300m.
Thus police would catch thief in 300/(20 -15) secs = 60 secs
a. So dog shall travel a total distance of 30 x 60 secs = 1800m
(Note in this time police has travelled 20 x 60 = 1200 m only.
but dog has moved 1800 meaning 600m more than the police.
This 600 is the additional distance he moves towards and away
from the thief equally. So for the dog movement towards thief is
1200m (effective dist) + 600/2 = 1500 towards thief
and towards police it is 1800 – 1500 = 300m )

b. R S when dog is moving away from police is 30 – 20 = 10m/s

R S when dog is moving towards police is 30 + 20 = 50 m/s
The ratio is 10/50 = 1/5.
Thus we now split the total distance travelled by the dog in this
ratio - i.e. 1800 in 1:5 ratio giving us 300m and 1500m.
Obviously the shorter distance is the one which it runs to the
police and the larger is the one which it moves toward the thief.
