Vehicle electronics overview, system description

Introduction
This document describes the basics of the vehicle electronic system. The purpose is to provide a quick start and briefly
describes functions, components and communication types. For more detailed information on the system, please refer
to the function, component and system descriptions published in Impact.

Electrical Architecture
The value Truck Architecture consists of 3 mandatory ECUs (Electronics Control Units) and Optional ECUs depending
on Truck variant. All the ECUs are connected & communicate with CAN network. After Market/ OBD Tools can be
connected to the network via OBD connector for diagnosing ECUs / software download to ECUs.

Components
Detailed description of each component can be found in each component section.

Programmable ECUs:

Integrated Electronic Control Unit (IECU): IECU performs and controls the vehicle related functionality.

Engine Management System (EMS): EMS performs and controls the Engine related functionality.

Telematics Gate Way (TGW): Telematics ECU is optional ECU. Trucks with telematics variant only will have this ECU.

Non- programmable ECUs:

Software download cannot be done to these ECUs. For any update in the software complete ECU needs to be
replaced.

Instrument Cluster (IC): Instrument Cluster is the display Unit.

Antilock Brake System (ABS): ABS is optional ECU. Trucks with Anti-Lock Braking variant only will have this ECU.

After treatment Control Module (ACM): SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) Variant Trucks.

1. Fuse and Relay Centre (FRC)

2. Audio head unit
3. Flasher unit

Fuse and Relay Centre (FRC):

The FRC is combined together with IECU and is located in the cab. The FRC provides protected power to the vehicle
electrical system and distributes power to the required components.

Audio:
Audio system is standalone unit.

Flasher:
Flasher Unit control the signal lights. It supports diagnostics in signal lights and sends the information to Instrument
cluster.

Power

Power generation and storage

The power distribution topology shows the power supply to the different loads in the vehicle.
There are two distribution centres:

Battery and fuse box

FRC

There is a main switch to cut off the battery supply to the various loads outside cab.
Based on the position of key, four Voltage lines are available.

1. Kl 30 – Direct input from battery

2. Kl R– Input with starter key in radio position
3. Kl +15 – Input with starter key in ignition ON position

3.
4. Kl 61 – Input when alternator charges

All these voltage lines are available at the FRC and all loads except pre heater.
The power to the pre heater is supplied directly from the battery box and fuse box through a dedicated fuse.

Diagnostics
ECUs in the truck have self-diagnostic and reporting capability.
The diagnostics information can be accesses through

1. In vehicle diagnostics(IVD)
2. On-board diagnostics (OBD)
3. Telematics

In vehicle diagnostics:
In vehicle diagnostics can be performed through Instrument cluster. The actions that can be performed via Instrument
cluster are limited.

1. Read/clear fault code Information

2. Read & Update Parameters

On-board diagnostics:
The service technician can connect PC with the diagnostic tool (VOLVO: Volvo Tech Tool, VTNA: Premium Tech Tool)
and perform all the diagnostic actions on the ECU.

1. Read/clear fault code Information

The DTC’s (Diagnostic Trouble Code) and information related to each ECU can be accessed from all ECUs.
Inactive fault codes can be cleared after the fault is rectified in the Truck.
2. Perform routines
Test/ Control outputs actions can be done on the ECUs to perform any routines.
3. Read & Update Parameters
4. Software downloads
Software in ECUs (for ECUs that can be programmed) can be done through the tools.

Telematics:
Sending, receiving and storing diagnostics information via telecommunication devices. Diagnostics through telematics
is limited to telematics variant trucks..
