Edexcel International S1 Discrete random variables

Section 2: Expectation and variance

Exercise level 2
1. Part of the probability distribution of a variable, X, is given in the table.
x 0 1 2 3
3 1 2
P(X = x)
10 5 5

(i) Find P(X = 0).

(ii) Find E(X) and Var(X).

2. A sixth form class consists of 7 girls and 5 boys. Three students from the class are
selected at random. The number of boys chosen is denoted by the random variable X.
Show that
(i) P(X = 0) = 447
(ii) P(X = 2) = 227
The complete probability distribution is shown in the following table.
x 0 1 2 3
7 21 7 1
P(X = x)
44 44 22 22

(iii) Calculate E(X) and Var(X).

3. In Fatima’s cupboard there are 3 tins of baked beans and 2 tins of pineapple.
Unfortunately all the labels have been removed so the tins appear identical. Fatima
wishes to use both of the tins of pineapple for a fruit salad so opens tins at random until
she has opened the tins of pineapple.
Let X be the number of tins that Fatima opens.
(i) Show that P(X = 3)  15

The complete probability distribution of X is shown below.

x 2 3 4 5
1 1 3 2
P(X = x)
10 5 10 5

(ii) Find the expectation and variance of the number of tins that Ms Cuker opens.

4. Two sweets are drawn and eaten at random from a bag containing three chocolates and
four toffees.
If X is the random variable “the number of chocolates drawn and eaten”, find
(i) the expected number of chocolates to be eaten
(ii) the standard deviation of X.

5. The probability distribution of the discrete random variable X is shown below.

x 0 2

P(X = x) a 1–a

Find E(X) and Var(X) in terms of a.

6. A discrete random variable X is described in the table below.

r 2 3 4 5 6
P(X = r) 0.1 0.1 0.1 0.3 0.4

(i) Calculate E(X) and Var (X)

(ii) What is P((X + 3) = 8)?
(iii) Calculate E(X + 3) and Var(X + 3).

7. The sides of an six-sided fair spinner are numbered 1 – 6.

(i) Find the mean and variance of the score obtained from one spin.
(ii) A second fair spinner has five sides numbered {2, 5, 8, 11, 14}. Find the mean and
variance of the score obtained from one spin of this spinner.
(iii) Find the mean and variance of the score obtained by adding together the scores from
one spin of each spinner.
