money using phrasal verbs like save up,
fork out , pay off, etc.
Credit crunch(n): economic conditions that make

crisis, but ignore us
the rest of the time
Manipulate (v): to control something or someone to
your advantage

get by:
take out (a loan)
save up:
fork out:
cut back on:
rip off:
run out of:
pay off:
Get by: survive day to day, especially financially

Some students don’t have a lot of money to squander,


but they get by.
Take out (a loan): make a financial agreement with a
bank or company

A friend of mine will take out a loan to pay his bills.


Save up: accumulate money for future use

It’s responsible to save up money for important


things.
Fork out: spend a lot of money on something,pay or
give especially unwillingly

Alex will fork out a lot of money to have his car


repaired.
Cut back: reduce the amount that you usually spend

Some people should cut back on fast food too.


Rip off: charge (someone) more money for something
than it is worth, overcharge

Taxi drivers usually rip tourists off.


Run out of: use all of something and not have any left

She is running out of money.


Pay off: give back all the money you owe for
something

They need help to pay off their bills.

B: I’m saving up for a car. The car I have now is three years old, but I need
a new one. Are you saving up for anything at the moment?
A: Not really. Saving up is not really my thing. I’m not proud of it, but the
thing is that I’m only nineteen now and don’t see a need for saving yet.
B: What advice would you give someone for cutting back on spending?
A: For cutting back on spending, Id’ suggest budgeting money in the first
place. Without a budget, it is difficult to allot resources effectively. What
do you suggest for cutting back on spending?
B: Going out less often and purchasing less clothing items can help to cut
back on spending. With my family we go out once a week and spend
around S/. 200, and that’s not little money…
