TOTAL AREA = 54.55 TOTAL PERIMETER = 35.60

DESIGN

Step 1 - DETERMINATION OF DESIGN FLOOD :---

(i) As per clause 3.2 of T.C. 36 using Dicken's formula :-

Q = C x M ^3/4

Where ,Q = Maximum discharge

C = Dicken's coefficient = 19
M= Catchement Area = 331.00 sqkm
So, Q = C x M ^3/4 = 1474.44 Cumecs

(ii) As per clause 3.2 (b) of T.C. 36 using prolonged formula :-

0.75 x 331.00 x 1000 x 1000

Q =
100 60 x 60

Q= 689.58 Cumecs

(iii) As per clause 3.2 (c) of T.C. 36 using manning's equation at observed H.F.L

Q= AxV
V= 1/n x R^2/3 x S^1/2
Where ,Q = Maximum discharge
A = Area at HFL = 222.33 sqm
n = manning's constant = 0.03
s = Hydraulic gradient = 0.0017
P = perimeter at HFL = 57.68 m
R = A/P = 3.8545

So, V= 1/n x R^2/3 x S^1/2 = = 3.39 m/sec

And, Q = A x V = 753.70 Cumecs

Adopting maximum value of above three values ,

So , Maximum Discharge = 1474.44 Cumecs
Step 2 - DETERMINATION OF AFFLUX:---

(i) At the maximum flood discharge. ( All opening closed )

The afflux for design flood is calculated by Mole's worth formula :-

Afflux =

2 2
V + 0.015 X A -1
2
2g a

Where , V = Velocity of flow at HFL = 3.39 m/sec

A= Unobstructed Area = 222.33 sqm

O= Obstructed Area = 54.55

a = Unobstructed Area - Obstructed Area = 167.78 sqm

g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/sec/sec

So Afflux = 0.45
Afflux level = H.F.L + Afflux
Afflux level = 512.96

(ii) At the discharge, when the flow in vergin nalla is at the level of proposed
stop dam crest and all gates open :-

Afflux =

2 2
V + 0.015 X A -1

2
2g a

V = 1/n x R^2/3 x S^1/2

Where , V = Velocity of flow at FRL

A= Unobstructed Area = 222.33 sqm
a = Unobstructed Area - Obstructed Area = 167.78 sqm
g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/sec/sec
n = manning's constant = 0.03
s = Hydraulic gradient = 0.0017
P = perimeter at FRL = 35.60 m
R = A/P = 1.5323
So, V= 1/n x R^2/3 x S^1/2 = 1.83 m/sec

So Afflux = 0.14
Afflux level = H.F.L + Afflux
Afflux level = 512.65

(iii) Afflux when the gates are closed for the discharge under condition when
flow in vergin nalla is at the level of proposed stop dam crest.

Under this condition the stop dam may be assumed to behave as broad crested weir.

Q= AxV

Q= C X L X H^3/2

Where , V = Velocity of flow at FRL = 1.83

A= Area At FRL = 54.55 sqm
C= Constant = 1.80
Length of crest portion = 37.50

SO, A X V = C X L X H^3/2
SO, H= 1.3

So Afflux = 1.30
Afflux level = H.F.L + Afflux
Afflux level = 513.81

Adopting maximum value of above three values ,

So , AFFLUX H.F.L. = 513.81

Therefore ,We provide key wall upto 513.81 ( if possible ) level in both sides of main body .
Step 3 - DETERMINATION OF SCOUR DEPTH :---

(i) As per clause 3.4 & 3.7 of T.C. 36 :-

Ds = 2
1.374 X ( qd / f )
1/3

where qd = Q
P-2R

Where , qd =Design discharge

Q = Maximum discharge = 1474.44 Cumecs
P = perimeter at HFL = 57.6800 m
R = A/P = 3.8545
f = lacey's silt factor ( 1.76 √Mr) = 1.57
So, qd = Q / ( P - 2 R ) = 29.51 Cumec/m
Add 20% for concentration of Flood = 35.41 Cumec/m

Ds = 1.374 X ( qd2 / f )1/3 = 12.47

Max. Scour Level = HFL-Ds = 500.04

Above calculation based on continuous impervious foundation but as per site condition
H.R. is available At 1m below nbl , hence provide foundation at 2.0 m below nbl :-

so , Foundation R.L. :- 502.84

Step 4 - DETERMINATION OF CUTOFF DEPTH :---

As per clause 3.10 of T.C. 36 :-

(i) U/S cut off = 1.2x Ds = 14.96

So U/S cut off R.L. = H.F.L.- Depth = 497.55

Above calculation based on continuous impervious foundation but as per site condition
H.R. is available at 1m , hence provide U/S CUTOFF at 3.0 m below nbl :-

so , U/s cutoff R.L. :- 501.84

(ii) D/S cut off = 1.5x Ds = 18.70
So U/S cut off R.L. = H.F.L.- Depth = 493.81

Above calculation based on continuous impervious foundation but as per site condition
H.R. is available at 1m , hence provide D/S CUTOFF at 3.0 m below nbl :-

so , D/s cutoff R.L. :- 501.84

Step 5 - DETERMINATION OF FLOOR LENGTH:---

As per clause 3.8 of T.C. 36 :-

i) L= H / 0.11
where H = Maximum Hydraulic Head = CREST LEVEL - FOUNDATION LEVEL = 5.67
so , L = 51.55 m

ii) L = CL x H

where CL = CONSTANT = 9.00

so , L = 51.03 m

Above calculation based on continuous impervious foundation but as

per site condition H.R. is available at 1 m below NBL , hence 10 m
appron floor length provided.

Hence provide floor length of 10.0 m

Step 6 - DETERMINATION OF FLOOR THICKNESS :---

As per clause 3.8 of T.C. 36 :-

t = H X 1.2
( re - 1 )

Where t = thickness of floor

where H = Maximum Hydraulic Head = CREST LEVEL - FOUNDATION LEVEL = 5.67
re = density of concrete = 2.40 T/cum

so , t = 4.86 m

Above calculation based on continuous impervious foundation but as per site

condition DIR, SR and H.R. is available at approxi 1.00m depth
approximately , hence 1.20 m apron floor thickness is provided.
Cistern top level = Deepest Nalla bed - 0.20m = 505.44

Provided 0.60 m thick RCC M-20 with 10 MM dia. Bars @ 200 mm c/c .
