Building Blocks 1
build up up and up
Designed to be used with commercially available building blocks such as Duplo® and Lego®.
Kids often have difficulties processing all of the incoming sensory information from a task
and dont know where to look or pay attention only to the things that make sense to them.
There are many characteristics to pay attention to such as colour, size, shape, positioning,
quantity etc. Kids need to know which are the important things to pay attention to, to help
with the planning and sequencing of the task.
Attention to detail is required to work out how many you need, what comes next, as well as
where do they go. Kids who are not interested in visual supports, often need to develop
more efficient visual processing skills first to enable them to understand all of the detail of
what they are looking at.
Building Blocks 1 is helpful in teaching kids `how’ to learn, so that they can increase their
ability to pay attention to the strategies being taught to them. The instructions are designed
to guide kids through the building step by step using visual guides and to reduce the
amount of reliance on an adult telling them what to do next. Kids need to learn to ‘look’ for
the answer when given a new toy to play with or a multiple step task rather than waiting for
the prompt.
The worksheets are designed to support organisation and planning skills with a list of what
you need, as well as the overall design of what you need to build. Kids can build on top of
the actual worksheets to help with attention to detail. The Boardmaker PCS (Picture Commu-
nication Symbols) are used to help understand what to do.

the pages each color in a seperate bag. This is extremely impor-
tant in reducing the sensory overload for kids.

what they are looking at.
Building Blocks 2 is helpful in teaching kids how to build recognisable objects. Some kids
can build quite complex structures when they are choosing what they want to make, but
find it difficult if you ask them to build something else. E.g. they might make fantastic cars or
spaceships but if you ask them to build an elephant they wouldnt know where to start. These
worksheets are a great introduction to the planning need for drawing, where kids need to
identify the most promiment features to include e.g. Elephant - legs, stomach, head, trunk.
The worksheets are designed to support organisation and planning skills with a list of what
you need, as well as the overall design of what you need to build. Kids can build on top of the
