Introductory Message
Welcome to General Mathematics for Senior High School!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide
the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring
the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The General Mathematics for Senior High School will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The General Mathematics for Senior High School is developed to help you
continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner,
carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer
the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Finding the Domain and Range of an Exponential Function

I. Learning Competency with Code

Finds the domain and range of an exponential function. (M11GM-If-3)

II. Background Information for Learners

Domain and range gives the learners a deeper understanding of the
function. In a function, domain is the set of input values used for the
independent variable while range is the set of output values for the dependent
variables. Every function has its own way to interpret its domain and range.
For any exponential function of the form 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒂𝒃𝒙 , the domain D is the
set of all real numbers which can be denoted by any of the following :
D: (-,)
D: - < x < 
D: {x/x is a real number}

On the other hand, the range R is the set of all real numbers above or below
the horizontal asymptote, y = c, where c is the value of the asymptote. It can
be denoted given the following condition:
If a > 0 , then R: f(x) > c or R: (c,  )
If a < 0 , then R: f(x) < c or R: (c, - )
Study the graph below, to further understand the domain and range of the
exponential function.

𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2(3𝑥 ) + 2 Remember:
Asymptote: = 2 ; a > 0
There may be
D: (-,) restrictions in the
R: (2, ) domain and
range when
exponential
𝑦=2 function is used
to model real life
𝑦=1 situation. So, it is
very important to
examine the
graph before you
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = −2(3𝑥 ) + 1 determine the
Asymptote: = 1 ; a < 0 domain and
range.
D: (-,)
R: (1,- )

1
Example 1. What is the domain and range of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 3(2𝑥 )?
Solution: Graph the function to visually examine the possible values of
domain and range.

 No restriction on the
values of x.
 The function f(x)
approaches positive
infinity as x
increases and
approaches 0 as x
decreases.
 The graph is
asymptotic at y = 0.
 The value of a = 3 is
greater than 0
(a > 0).

Thus, the D: (-,) and R: (0, )

1𝑥+1
Example 2. What is the domain and range of 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 5( ) − 2?
2
Solution: Graph the function to visually examine the possible values of
domain and range.
 No restriction on the
values of x.
 The function g(x)
approaches 2 as x
increases and
approaches positive
infinity as x
decreases.
 The graph is
asymptotic
at y = 2.
 The value of a = 5 is greater than 0 (a > 0).

Thus, the D: (-,) and R: (2, )

2
Example 3. The graph of the exponential function is given below, find the
domain and range.

Solution: Examine the graph for any restriction or asymptotes.

 The graph has close endpoint at (-16, -6) where x = -16 and y = -6.
 The function approaches negative infinity as x increases and approaches
-6 as x decreases.
 The graph is asymptotic at y = -6.
Thus, the D: [-16,) and R: [-6, - )

1
Example 4. What is the domain and range of ℎ(𝑥 ) = − (2𝑥 ) + 3
2
where x < 3?

Solution: Graph the function to visually examine the possible values of domain
and range.

 The graph has open endpoint at

(3, -1) where x = 3 and y = -1.
 The function h(x) approaches -1
as x increases and approaches
3 as x decreases.
 The graph is asymptotic at y = 3.

Thus, the D: (3,-) and R: (-1, 3)

IV. Activity Proper

General Directions: In answering the exercises in the Learning Activity Sheet
(LAS), please be reminded not to write anything here. Read each problem
carefully and all answers must be written in a separate sheet of paper.

Exercise I: Identify the domain and range of each function.

1. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = −5𝑥 − 2 D: _______ ; R: _________

2. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 4−𝑥 D: _______ ; R: _________

1
3. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = (3𝑥 ) + 6 D: _______ ; R: _________
2

4. 𝑟 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥+1 , 𝑥≥0 D: _______ ; R: _________

5. 𝑡(𝑥 ) = −3𝑥 − 0.75 , 𝑥 < −4 D: _______ ; R: _________

Exercise II: Given the graph of the exponential function, identify which of the
following statement/s is true. Write the letter/s of your answer.

1.

4
A. The range of the function is the set of all real numbers.
B. The domain of the function is the set of all real numbers.
C. The function is asymptotic at y = -1, thus only -1 is not included in the
range.
D. The domain of the function is (-1, ).
E. The range of the function is (-1, ).

2.

A. The range of the function is [4, -).

B. The range of the function is [1, -).
C. The domain of the function is [4, -).
D. The domain of the function is [1, -).
E. The y value of 1 is included in the range.

Guide Questions:
1. What prerequisite knowledge or skills are needed in order to find
correctly the domain and range of a function?
2. Using the graph of the function, what axis needs to be given emphasis
in finding the domain? What about in finding the range?

V. Reflection
Instruction. Reflect on the question and write your answer on your journal or
notebook.
In your own words, what technique or strategy can you think of to facilitate your
way of finding the domain and range of an exponential function?

5
6
Exercise I:
1. D: (-,) ; R: (-2, -)
2. D: (-,) ; R: (0, )
