QUESTION ONE

a) State two applications of signal processing. [2]


b) Mention one signal operation /transformation and explain how it is applied in real life. [2]
c) In line with signals and systems define the following terms:

b) The systems that follow have input x(t) or x[n] and outputs y(t) or y[n]. for each system
determine whether it is (i) causal (ii) time invariant and (iii) memoryless.

Figure 1

Figure 1 shows a Linear Time Invariant (LTI) digital filtering network where ℎ1 [𝑛] =
[𝟏. 𝟓 3 1.25], ℎ2 [𝑛] = [ 𝟎. 𝟓 3 1] , ℎ3 [𝑛] = 𝑢[𝑛] − 𝑢[𝑛 − 2] and the input signal 𝑥[𝑛] = 2 +

a) Determine the overall impulse response of the network h[n]. [3]


b) Determine the Fundamental period (N0) of x[n] and the fundamental frequency Ω0 . [2]
c) Sketch exactly fundamental periods of x[n]. [2.5]
d) Compute the Power of x[n]. [2]
e) Draw the Two Sided Magnitude Spectrum of x[n] and use it to calculate the power of x[n]
proving that it is the same as computed in (d). [3]
f) calculate output y[n] and express it as a sum of impulse responses. [2.5]

QUESTION FOUR
a) Consider the input signal to an LTI system as 𝐱(𝐭) = 𝒆𝒕 𝐮(−𝐭). If the output to the
system is m easured as 𝒚(𝒕) = 𝒆−𝒕 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒕 𝒖(𝒕) + 𝒆−𝒕 𝒖(𝒕) + 𝟐𝒆𝒕 𝒖(−𝒕)
i. Determine the t ransfer function H(S) of the system and its region of
convergence (R OC) . [6]
ii. sketch the pole-zero plot. [2]
iii. Is the system causal and stable? Justify your answers. [2]

b) Prove that the signals 𝑥1 (𝑡) = 𝑒 −𝑎𝑡 𝑢(𝑡) and 𝑥2 (𝑡) = −𝑒 −𝑎𝑡 𝑢(𝑡) have the same X(s) and
differ only in ROC. Plot their ROC’s. [5]

QUESTION FIVE
a) Why is the study of Fourier series important in signals and systems? [1]
b) Briefly discuss how Fourier series is applied in communication. In your discussion, explain
what your application is about, the challenges and how Fourier series is applied to solve the
problem. [3]
