2.2 Instrument weighing functions

T050E is a weight transmitter with optional load limiting capabilities.

It is not a conventional weighing instrument, and Gross/Net and Tare functions are not provided.

On board relay are operated as alarm relay, so they are always energized in normal conditions and
are deenergized when in alarm.

2.2.1 Load cell sensitivity

The instrument provide a mean to define the sensitivity of the load cells used in the specific
application. This function is useful to better adapt the instrument to the particular weighing system
in order to operate in the best conditions.
During the configuration phase the load cell sensitivity can be defined programming the parameter
defined as “LC SE” (Load Cell Sensitivity):

Default value is 2 mV/V (covering the majority of application) but values ranging from 1 mV/V to 4
mV/V can be programmed.

The operating range of the instrument goes from – 10% to +110% of the selected sensitivity. For
example using a sensitivity of 2 mV/V the T050 can operate with signals ranging from –0.2 m/V/ ro
2.2 mV/V.

2.2.2 Full scale and sensitivity

After a system initialization the transmitter must be calibrated on the basis of the effective weighing
system before performing any weighing operation.
When not calibrated the unit shows the value of the signal provided by the load cell (value showed
in mV/V). The indication is blinking to indicate the uncalibrated condition of transmitter.

First of all, the full scale value of the weighing system must be defined, programming the
parameters “Division” and “Resolution”: the transmitter SPAN is given by the product of Divisions
and Resolution.

The SPAN value is the reference value for alarm set-point (than can be programmed in the range -
10%..+110% of SPAN) and the full scale value of the analog output (the zero value of the analog
output always correspond to the 0 load).

Values displayed on board or transmitted on the serial line are not limited to 0 or full scale and
always report the effective load value.

2.2.3 Load cell signal averaging

611-MTU77404 Rev. 1 Page 8 of 48

ADOS S.R.L. Buccinasco (MI)

Starting with SW rev 1.04 a new load cell signal averaging method have been introduced (FIR
filters). This method is based upon Digital Signal Processing (DSP) methodologies and is useful
when the load cell signal has a large amount of harmonics (due for instance to mixers, agitators or
similar).

In configuration phase user can select one of three classic ( mobile average) and five DSP filters.

First type of filter has a fester response time but are less efficient against disturbance and can be
used when fast changing loads have to be detected.

Second type of filter are very efficient against noise and disturbances (having a higher filter effect)
but have of course a higher response time.

In both cases higher filter coefficient corresponds to higher filtering effect and higher response time.

As example the following graphic shows the answer to a step changing load signal as function of
different filters.
As can be noticed FIR 1 has a response time of about 0.2 seconds and FIR 5 has a response time of
about 2.5 second.

2.3 Operating mode

The instrument can operate in three different modes :

• independent
• combined with one or two twin cranes
• coupled with another trolley mounted on the same crane

2.3.1 Independent mode

In this operating mode the over load alarms are handled using the trip levels configured as
parameters “PA OL” and “AL OL”.
Alarm related to load balance are not handled and relays are always energized.

2.3.2 Combined mode

In this operation mode two cranes are combined to lift a load together.
In combined mode the units are connected together by primary serial line or (in option) by radio
modem.
By SW1-1 switch one instrument is defined MASTER and the other one SLAVE.
In this operating mode the over load alarms related to the single crane are handled using the trip
levels configured as parameters “PAOLC” and “ALOLC”.
The alarms related to total load lifted by two cranes are handled using the trip levels configured as
parameters “PAOLS” and “ALOLS”.

Alarm related to load balance are handled based on load difference respected to the coupled unit.

The operating mode is defined by a state of the contact connected to control input M1-K:

Open contact : independent mode

Close contact : combined mode

2.3.3 Coupled mode

In this operating mode the over load alarms are handled using the trip levels configured as
parameters “PA OL” and “AL OL”.
The over load alarms related to the coupled load are handled using the trip levels configured as
parameters “PAOL3” and “ALOL3”.
Alarm related to load balance are not handled and relays are always energized.

The coupled mode selection is determined by the “ACCPP” parameter selection :

OFF: independent mode

ACP M: coupled mode as master on serial line
ACP S: coupled mode as slave on serial line

2.4 Display indication

2.4.1 Primary display

Under normal operating condition (i.e. during weighing) the display shows the value of the weight,
using the following criteria:
• leading zeroes are presented as blank
• if the value is greater then 99999 only the 5 less significant digit are displayed and the display
will blink to indicate that there is another digit, which value is 1, not displayed (please note that
during configuration is not possible to set a value of SPAN which leads to results higher than
199999)
• the polarity “minus” (in case of negative values) is indicated in the leftmost digit
• if the negative value is composed of five digits (for example -32420), the leftmost digit will show
alternatively the “minus” and the fifth digit value.

There are no limits in weight indication, either lower or upper.

In case of malfunction of the load cell or load cell wiring the message “FAIL” will be reported on
display for half a second every two seconds.

In case of configuration parameter error the message “ER XX” will be reported on display for half a
second every two seconds (XX is the code of the wrong parameter, see “Diagnostic”).

In the configuration and calibration phase, the display is used to guide the operator in carrying out
the functions.

2.4.2 Auxiliary display

Auxiliary display always shows the value of the weight, using the same criteria of the primary
display.

In case of failure or errors, the messages “FAIL” or “ER XX” will be reported.

2.5 LED status indicators

The instrument is equipped with four relay status LED and one board status LED.

Relay LED are lighted when the relevant relay is energized.

Board status LED flashes once a second when the instrument is in normal operation and twice a
second when the instrument is configuration mode.
LED always ON or OFF indicates an abnormal board condition.

ADOS S.R.L. Buccinasco (MI)

2.5.1 Repeater panel

The repeater indicates the value of lifted load with the following criteria :

In case of malfunction of the load cell or load cell wiring the message will be reported on display
alternated with the value of load :

F A I L

In case of configuration parameter error the message will be reported on display for half a second
every two seconds (XX is the code of the wrong parameter, see “Diagnostic”) alternated with the
value of load :

E R x x

In combined mode the panel of the MASTER unit will display the value of the total lifted load
(preeceded by a letter T) alternated with the value of its own load:

T 1 2 3 4

In coupled mode the panel of the SLAVE unit will display the value of the total lifted load
(preeceded by a letter C) alternated with the value of its own load:

C 1 2 3 4

In combined mode if the MASTER unit detects a loss of communication with the SLAVE unit the
indication of lifted load is alternated with the error message :

L I N 1

In combined mode if the SLAVE unit detects a loss of communication with the MASTER unit the
indication of lifted load is alternated with the error message :

L I N

If the repeater receives no data from serial line the following error message is displayed :

L I N E (blinking)

If the repeater receives no valid data from serial line the following error message is displayed :

C H A R (blinking)

2.8 Self diagnostic

T050E transmitter has a number of built-in self diagnostic features intended to improve the overall
operating safety.

Generally speaking, when a fault condition is detected, the instrument is driven to a safety condition
deenergizing alarm relays.

Display indications are provided to help in fault finding.

2.8.1 Transmitter operating status

Transmitter status LED flashes once a second when the instrument is in normal operation mode and
twice a second when the instrument is configuration mode.

LED always ON or OFF indicates an abnormal board condition.

2.8.2 Load cell connection check (FAIL SAFE)

The instrument continuously checks the load cell connection (for both open circuit and short circuit
of power and signal lines) and, if any abnormal condition arises, an internal FAIL signal is
generated.
The FAIL signal is operated upon only if one of the alarm relay is programmed as “FAIL” relay.

When the FAIL signal becomes effective (i.e. when the relevant relay deenergizes) all other relays
are driven to alarm condition (deenergized), the analog output is cleared and the FAIL code is
reported in the transmitted frame (if the serial line is operating).

2.8.3 Configuration memory integrity check

Check is carried out at power on.

If the configuration memory is found defective, the power on sequence will not be completed , all
relays are driven to alarm condition (deenergized), the analog output is cleared and the serial line is
deactivated.

A forced reconfiguration to default is then performed and the primary display shows the following
message:

I N I T Blinking

The transmitter stays in this condition as long as a key is pressed by operator to acknowledge the
situation.
The instrument must be reconfigured and recalibrated.

611-MTU77404 Rev. 1 Page 15 of 48

ADOS S.R.L. Buccinasco (MI)

2.8.4 Configuration parameter integrity check

Check is carried out every operating cycle.

If a configuration parameter is found defective, the message “ER XX” will be reported on display
for half a second every two seconds, where XX is the code of the wrong parameter, according to the
following table:

2.9 Relay operation

The base instrument is equipped with one or four relays that can be configured as required.
Two SPDT voltage-free contacts are available for each relay.

The relay (if configured for HI AL) is driven to alarm (deenergized) when the weight is greater then
or equal to the programmed alarm level (parameter VAL #) for a period of time longer than the
“minim time to alarm” (parameter DAL #). The relay returns to “normal” condition (energized)
when the weight value drops below the value calculated as the sum of the threshold value and the
defined dead band value (parameter DB #) for a period of time longer than the “minim time to
normal” (parameter DOK #).

Same criteria are used to handle a relay configured as “FAIL”: in this case the alarm level
(parameter VAL #) and the dead band (parameter DB#) have no meaning, but the time criteria to go
to alarm and to return to normal are still effective.

The return to normal condition of relays programmed for alarm memorization is subject to the
closure of the ACK input.

Each relay can be configured to operate in one of the following modes:

Off
The relay is permanently deenergized.
Minim load alarm or slack rope alarm (AL LO)
The alarm condition is effective when the load is lower then or equal to the programmed value.
Overload pre alarm in independent mode (PA OL)
The alarm condition is effective when the load is higher then or equal to the pre alarm programmed
trip value.
Unbalanced load pre alarm in combined mode (PA BL)
The alarm condition is effective when the difference between the value of lifted load and the value
of lifted load of the other unit is higher then or equal to the pre alarm programmed value.
Overload load pre alarm in combined mode (PAOLS)
The alarm condition is effective when the sum of lifted load and the value of lifted load of the other
combined unit is higher then or equal to the pre alarm programmed value.

Overload load pre alarm in coupled mode (PAOL3)

The alarm condition is effective when the sum of lifted load and the value of lifted load of the other
coupled unit is higher then or equal to the pre alarm programmed value.

Overload or Unbalanced load alarm in combined mode (ALLAR)

The alarm condition is effective when the load is higher then or equal to the alarm programmed
value or the difference between the value of lifted load and the value of lifted load of the other unit

2.11 ANALOG OUTPUT MANAGEMENT

In combined mode the MASTER analog output is automatically assigned (defined by a state of the
contact connected to control input M1-K) to the single load lifted or to the total load lifted from the
two units.
According to above selection, the following parameters are provided for configuration :

DA 0 – DA FS in independent mode
DA 0A – DA FSA in combined mode

The 16-bit analog output can be configured using jumper JP2 for current (4-20 mA) or voltage (0-
10V) output.
The option board is factory configured for current output.

JP2 open 4÷20 mA Mode

JP2 closed 0÷10 V Mode

The zero scale is associated to zero weight and full scale value is associated to SPAN value.

If the weight value is negative the output signal is blocked at zero scale (0 V or 4 mA).
If the value of weight is higher than SPAN the output signal is blocked at the full scale (10 V or 20
mA).

Acting from keyboard is possible the fine tuning of the analog signal corresponding to both zero and
full scale.

2.11.1 Analog signal adjustment

The instruments provide a fine adjustment of the analog output beyond the following limits:

Reference Lower adj. limit Upper adj. limit Step

0V -0,400 V 0,400 V 2 mV
10 V 9,600 V 10,400 V 2 mV
4 mA 3,340 mA 4,660 mA 3,3 µA
20 mA 19,340 mA 20,660 mA 3,3 µA

Zero e Full Scale adjustment can be performed during D/A Zero and D/A Full Scale Calibration.

- - 0 - - Zero adjustment
S P A N Full Scale adjustment

Pressing the F/INC button the number of adjustment step can be incremented up to 199.
Pressing the DEC button the number of adjustment step can be decremented down to -199.

5. INSTRUMENT CONTROL

5.1 Introduction

The T050E transmitter is a programmable instrument that performs a set of functions which can be
adapted and/or personalized by the user to implement a variety of applications.

These functions can be modified by means of configuration parameters.

Therefore, the instrument must be configured on the basis of the specific application before being
used.

All the configuration parameters are maintained in non-volatile storage.

The parameter storage state is controlled when the instrument is turned on and each operating cycle
(see details at “Self Diagnostic” paragraph).

During the instrument configuration process, the status LED flashes at high rate to indicate to the
user that it is not in normal operating condition.

During the instrument configuration process the thresholds associated to the relays are controlled
normally.

If the serial line is active, the status flag in the transmitted message indicates that the instrument is
in the configuration process.

5.4 Calibration

After a system initialization, T050E is precalibrated to display 0 at 0 mV/V and 5000 at 2 mV/V, but
it must be calibrated on the basis of the effective weighing system before performing any weighing
operation.

The calibration operation consists of two phases:

• zero calibration
• Span calibration
• Linearization step 1
• Linearization step 2
• Linearization step 3
• Linearization step 4

First two phases must be carried out at least once, and is possible to carry out successive single
calibrations, zero only or Span only or individual linearization steps.

To enter the calibration mode the user must enter the instrument control mode, and use the F/INC
key to select the:

C A L I B

and press the E key.

The instrument prepares for the zero scale calibration function and the following message is
displayed:

- - 0 - -

Press the F/INC or DEC key to scroll trough the other available functions:

S P A N
L I N 1
L I N 2
L I N 3

5.4.1 Zero calibration

The weighing system must be set with ZERO weight.

After selecting the modality:

- - 0 - -

press the E key. The instrument shows the actual weight and Zero cal code on display.

Press the E key and the instrument prepares to receive the confirmation command and flashes the
messages on display.

Press the E key again and the instrument performs the zero calibration and displays the following
message for 2 seconds:

D O N E

Press the C key to exit.

5.4.2 Span calibration

The weighing system must be set with a KNOWN weight greater than 12.5% of the Span.
To get best results the known load must be as close as possible to the full scale.

The system is set to perform the calibration with a known weight corresponding to the value of the
weight currently on the balance.
The operator can modify this setting by changing the value of the known using the F/INC (or
DEC key) to increase (or decrease) the value on the display. The value change is performed in
steps of one division or, by keeping the key pressed, in larger and larger steps up to a maximum of
128 graduation.

After pressing the E key, the instrument prepares to receive the confirmation command and flashes
data on display:

Press the E key again and the instrument performs the Span calibration and displays the following
message for two seconds

D O N E

If the value of the known weight set is not correct, the instrument displays the following signal for
two seconds:

ADOS S.R.L. Buccinasco (MI)

E R R 1

If the load cell signal is too low, the instrument displays the following signal for two seconds:

E R R 2

5.4.3 Linearization

The T050E make available a weighing system linearization function. Up to 5 linearization segments
can be defined by user.

Linearization is achieved by means of subsequent calibration procedures performed at intermediate

steps between zero and span.
User must select a linearization step and operate as for a span calibration, using known loads.

User can define one or more steps, not necessarily in sequence (step 2 and 4 can be used, leaving
step 1 and 3 unused, so available for future use)

The only rule is the following:

• load value for LIN 1 must be < load value defined for LIN 2
• load value for LIN 2 must be > load value defined for LIN 1 and < load value defined for LIN 3
• load value for LIN 3 must be > load value defined for LIN 2 and < load value defined for LIN 4
• load value for LIN 4 must be > load value defined for LIN 3 and < load value defined for SPAN

If a value of 0 is programmed, the relevant step is disabled.
