Arithmetic Sequence

This document provides instruction on arithmetic sequences. It begins with warmup problems evaluating expressions with arithmetic sequences. It then lists the objectives of recognizing and extending arithmetic sequences and finding a given term. Several examples are provided of identifying arithmetic sequences based on their common differences. The concept of the nth term is introduced along with finding the nth term using the common difference. Practice problems are provided to find indicated terms of given arithmetic sequences and word problems involving arithmetic sequences.

4-6 Arithmetic Sequences

Objectives
Recognize and extend an arithmetic sequence.
Find a given term of an arithmetic sequence.

Holt Algebra 1
4-6 Arithmetic Sequences NOTES
VOCABULARY
•Sequence: A list of numbers that often
forms a pattern
•Term: Each number in a sequence
•Arithmetic sequence: A sequence in
which the terms differ by the same nonzero
number d.
•Common difference: The same non zero
number in which an arithmetic sequence
differs

Example:
•Identifying Arithmetic Sequences

9, 13, 17, 21,… The common difference is 4

 YES, ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

•Find the next 3 terms.

9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33,…

Reading Math
The three dots at the end of a sequence
are called an ellipsis. They mean that
the sequence continues and can read as
“and so on.”

Holt Algebra 1
4-6 Arithmetic Sequences
Example: Identifying Arithmetic Sequences

10, 8, 5, 1,… The difference between successive

terms is not the same.  NO
–2 –3 –4

You add to each term to find the

next term. The common difference is

 YES
–4, –2, 1, 5,… The difference between successive
+2 +3 +4 terms is not the same.  NO

The common difference (d) is 2.

Example:
•Finding the nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence

1, 5, 9, 13, 17,… The common difference (d) is 4.

+4 +4 +4

an = 4n+ 1
•Write a rule to find the 16th term.  n =16

an = 4n + 1
 a16 = 4(16) + 1 = 65
Holt Algebra 1
4-6 Arithmetic Sequences
Example:
•Finding the nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence

17,11, 5, –1, –7, …The common difference (d) is -6.

–6 –6 –6

an = –6n + 17
•Write a rule to find the 60th term.  n =60

an = –6n + 17
 a16 = –6(60) + 17 = –343
Holt Algebra 1
4-6 Arithmetic Sequences NOTES
Example:
•Finding the nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence

a1 = 2, d = 4 d = 4  the common difference is

4

–2 , 2, 6, 10, 14 … an = 4n – 2
+4 +4 +4

•Find the 34th term. a34 = 4(34) – 2

= 134

4-6 Arithmetic Sequences
Your Turn to Practice!!!
•Finding the nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence
•Find the indicated term of each arithmetic sequence.

1. 5, 6.5, 8, 9.5,… & 14th term

2. –4, –7, –10, –13, … & 23rd term
3. 2, 7, 12, 17, … & 40th term
4. a1 = –12, d = 2 & 7th term
5. Zelle has knitted 61 rows of a scarf. Each day she
adds 17 more rows. How many rows total has Zelle
knitted 16 days later?
