It is the first building in the world to use a pre cambered core with a built in lean of 350

millimeters that has been engineered to straighten with the addition of the upper
floor.
It is also the first building in world to use vertical post tensioning of the core to
counter movement and support stresses created by building over hang.
FOUNDATION

• The foundation consists of a rectangular raft

footing supported on 400 concrete piles of 1
meter diameter
• Half of the piles are under compression and
run to a depth of about 20 meters
• The other half of the piles run to a depth of
about 30 meters and anchor tightly to the soil
and are in tension due to the massive eccentric
overhang of the building
• The 2 meter deep raft footing was made up of
7000 cum of reinforeced concrete to distribute
the loads evenly on the piles
• The concrete core occupies the only vertical space available in
tower profile. It has high reinforcement levels , especially at the
steel framing connections .
The core has two innovative features:
• During construction a pre-cambered core was poured slightly
off vertical , so when the tower floors were framed in to the
opposite side, the added load straightened the tower.
• A post tensioned core was designed with vertical cables in one
side tensioned to counteract the lean on the other side. These
cables were installed in vertical segments that overlap each
other every seven floors. Strung together , they span the entire
height of the core to maintain it in a perfectly vertical position.
• The core was pre cambered meaning it was initially tilted away
from the overhang of the building and was straightened by the
dead load of the building
• The core was built using the technique called jump forming
• The concreting was done at night to avoid the extreme day
heat which maycause the concrete to dryand crack
• Slump tests werecarried out on evey batch of concrete
• Concreting was done by pumping and 250 mm slump
concretewas used
• Thecorewas post tensioned
• A total of 146 tendons were incorporated into the core
through ducts
The Façade
Every one of the 12,500 panes of glass on the facade is a different size, although each
pane is triangular

The structure has two diagrid systems i.e. an external diagrid and an internal diagrid
which is linked to the central core with eight pin jointed structural members

The external diagrid consists of 720 of such cruciform each different size and shape
and orientation.

Each Unit is two floors high and one diagrid wide about 800 x 800 mm on avg, which
carries vertical structural load.

The panels are braced for wind resistance at the middle floor slab, which carries the
horizontal load.
The upper half of the tower has a double skin façade to reduce the solar heat gain at
the hotel levels. This is a modified double façade, which recycles interior air from the
guest rooms into the façade cavity. Here it creates an insulating buffer between the
hot outside air and the cool inside air. The air is re-used in the room rather than
exhausted and replaced with outside air.
