    Nokia was once the dominant player in the mobile phone market but declined due to failure to adapt to the smartphone era. Nokia's Symbian OS lacked applications and a good user interface compared to newer operating systems like iOS and Android. Nokia also failed to effectively compete against smartphones from Apple and Samsung, losing market share, and did not implement a strong umbrella branding strategy like its competitors. Ultimately, Nokia was surpassed by other companies and had to sell its mobile phone business to Microsoft.

    In September 2013, Nokia sold what was once the world‘s largest vendor of
    mobile phones to Microsoft as part of an overall deal totaling US$7.17 billion.
    The deal closed on 25 April 2014 and completed on 20 July 2014.
