The key takeaways are that a wave trap is used to block high frequency communication signals from entering a substation while allowing 50Hz power signals to pass through. It works as a parallel resonant circuit that offers high impedance to communication frequencies.

The purpose of a wave trap is to offer high impedance to high frequency communication signals so that it obstructs the flow of these signals into a substation. It is used so that communication is not ineffective or impossible.

A wave trap works as a parallel resonant circuit that is installed on a power line in a substation. It is tuned to resonate at specific frequencies so that it offers the highest impedance to carrier frequencies used for communication while offering low impedance to 50Hz power signals, allowing them to flow.

Wave Trap

3
Purpose
1. It offers high impedance to high
frequency communication signals
2. So obstructs flow of these signals into
s/s.
3. If wave trap is not used – signal loss
will be more.
4. Communication – ineffective/
impossible

4
What is the enginnering ?
1. To couple a radio signal onto an
antenna carrying 220,000 Volts or more
2. Wave trap is a parallel resonant circuit
installed on power line in the s/s.
3. If wave trap is not used – signal loss
will be more.
4. It is tuned to resonate at a particular
frequency or frequencies.
5
Proper tuning of wave trap.
1. It is an Inductor coil.
2. In inductor –
Impedance = ωL=2πfL
3. So higher the frequency , higher
is the impedance.

6
Proper tuning of wave trap.
4. Properly tuned wave trap shows
highest magnitude of impedance to
at these carrier frequencies
5. Offers low impedance to 50Hz
signals.
6. It permits the flow of 50Hz
frequency signals.

7
Purpose
1. Communication
2. Inter tripping between two S/S –
called teleprotection.
3. Data/telemetering(send/receive)

8
Why dedicated communication ?
1. No need to rely on external agency for
communication
2. During emergency – communication
should be fast, clear
3. Hot line – Press and talk
4. Dialling
5. Can contact any s/s in the grid.
9
Why dedicated communication ?
1. 40kHz to 500kHz
2. 4kHz – band width
3. 2kHz – for speech
4. 2kHz for data transmission & protection
5. Suppose 100kHz used –
# 100 – 104 kHz - transmitter.
# 104 – 108 kHz - receiver

PLCC Coupling

1. Phase to Phase.
2. Phase to ground.
3. Interphase coupling

11
Single phase to ground
coupling
Single Wave Trap -
# One wave trap on any one phase.
# Reliability is reduced ( 90% faults are
single phase to earth faults).
# If phase to earth fault occurs on the same
PHASE on which wave trap is connected –
- AVAILABILITY IS LOST.

12
Phase to phase coupling -
1. Wave traps provided on Phase to phase
2. Same phases on both ends of line.
3. Reliability is more.

Associate equipments -

1. Wave trap – To block HF signals of PLCC from entering into the S/S .
Wave traps allow only high voltage power signal of 50Hz to enter inside S/S
Installation type – hanging or pedestal

15
Capacitive Voltage Transformer/
Coupling Capacitor
1. CVT – Only capacitor is used .
2. Used to block high voltage from
entering into LMU/PLCC

16
2. Line Matching Unit

1. Output of PLCC connected to

LMU.
2. From LMU it goes to Power Lines
to achieve proper impedance
matching between PLCC
equipments and power lines.
17
3.Drainage Coil and L.A.
1. To block any AC high voltage spikes
during surges from entering into
LMU/PLCC

18
4.Earth switch
1. Use to discharge trapped voltages during
maintenance

19
5.Co-axial cable

Interconnection between PLCC and

To carry HF signal

20
Maintenance -

A. Quarterly.
B. Annual.

21
Maintenance

A. Tightening of Primary terminal

connections.
B. No loose nut/bolts .
C. Check connection of internal LA
