    WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN
    ACCORDING TO INDIAN CONTEXT ?
    • Equitable/ Saman : The design is fair and non-discriminating to diverse users in Indian
    context by avoiding prejudices against people of all ages, gender, disability, sizes, caste,
    class and religion. In various level of engagement choices in access and use through
    flexibility and customization.
    • Usable/ Sahaj :The design is operable by all users in Indian context by providing
    independence, comfort, safety and support during use, clarity in use, operation and
    maintenance to minimize instruction and to avoid confusion and error.
    • Cultural / Sanskritik :The design respects the cultural past and the changing present
    assist all users in Indian context to Maintain social and traditional qualities in design.
    Include Indian idioms to make historic and social connection . Signage should be present
    in many languages for inclusive comprehension. For all castes and society levels.
    • Economy/ Sasta :The design respects affordability and cost considerations for diverse
    users in Indian context to ensure affordability, durability and maintainability.
    • Aesthetics/ Sundar :The design employs aesthetic to promote social integration among
    users in Indian context. Employ aesthetic to enhance universal appeal and use. Allowing
    personalizing aesthetics through flexibility, adaptability and modularity of color, form,
    texture and interaction.
    WHAT IS ACCESSIBILITY IN DESIGN
    ACCORDING TO INDIAN CONTEXT?
    •  Accessibility means the ability to access products, services
    and other features of the environment by all people,
    irrespective of their age, ability or status in life. The concept is
    closely linked with the idea of Universal Design, coined by
    architect Ronald L. Mace, which propagates design that is
    aesthetic and is usable for all kinds of people.
    • As India is very crowded and congested places in most parts of
    the country accessibility to all kinds of people becomes a great
    challenge.
    • Accessibility and associated technology for PWDs are quite
    advanced in India. There are numerous organizations working
    exclusively on making society more accessible, and they have
    been fairly successful in implementing their strategies.

    UNIVERSAL DESIGN
    CASE STUDY
    Wesleyan University Performing Arts Center
    Middletown, CT, USA
    INTRODUCTION:
    • Wesleyan University was founded in 1831 as a liberal arts college and this project
    includes an adaptive reuse of two of its earliest buildings. Today Wesleyan’s 360-
    acre campus with more than 340 buildings in Southern New England along the
    Connecticut River serves approximately 3000 students and 300 faculty. This
    project created a performing arts center in the middle of Wesleyan’s campus. The
    challenge was to site a new building that would provide an accessible path
    through the site, into the buildings, with principal entrances from both the historic
    front and the rear and the modern main campus walk while maintaining the
    integrity of the historic resources.
    • The complex consists of Memorial Chapel, now a 620-seat space for choral music,
    organ, and orchestral ensemble, lecture and worship; Patricelli ’92 Theater
    (formerly Rich Hall), a black box theater for 150. The new Zelnick Pavilion provides
    a lobby for both buildings as well as audience services and building systems and
    makes Memorial Chapel and Patricelli ’92 Theater accessible. The project included
    a complete exterior restoration of both historic buildings, Wesleyan’s first two
    buildings on College Row, including historic slate roof, brownstone restoration,
    historic window and door replacements, and stained glass conservation.

    • Universally designed worship platform
    • Seamless path of travel from the new Zelnick Pavilion to both
    historic buildings
    • Flexible lighting that can adapt to a wide array of functions
    • Good acoustical condition including isolation of HVAC noise
    • Though not part of this project, Wesleyan University has a
    notable campus map on its website which allows a valuable
    ‘know-before-you-go’ opportunity for anyone with a mobility
    limitation.
