MET703.2 1
OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period, you would be able

to know :

• The types of copper ores

• The chemical formulae
• The metallic content

MET703.2 2
RECAP

• Availability of copper ores

• Uses and effect of impurities

MET703.2 3
Classification of copper ores

• Native ores available in free state

• Oxide ores

• Sulphide ores

MET703.2 4
Native ores

• It is an elemental form of ore

• Native ores contain considerable amount of silver

• Concentrated by gravity methods

• Smelted in reverberatory furnace

• Copper produced from this is very pure hence

costlier

MET703.2 5
OXIDE ORES

• These are of disseminated type

• Greater part of iron is present as oxides, silicates
and carbonates.
• Available in limited quantities.
• Extracted pyrometallurgically.
• Coke is the best reductant.
• Readily reduced by carbon and carbon monoxide.

MET703.2 6
Sulphide ores

• These are most important ores of copper.

• Sulphide ores are massive bodies consisting of iron

and copper sulphides.

• Extracted pyrometallurgically.

• 0.5-2% copper is considered satisfactory.

• Coke is a reductant as well as heat supplier.

• Sulphur in sulphide ores is oxidised as so2 and so3.
