Aircraft Instrument System: Prepared by Mr. P.D.Nalawade

The document discusses aircraft instrumentation. It classifies instruments into four categories: flight, engine, navigation, and other instruments. It describes key flight instruments that use pitot-static systems like the altimeter, airspeed indicator (ASI), and vertical speed indicator (VSI). The altimeter measures height above sea level using static air pressure. The ASI measures airspeed using total and static pressure. The VSI indicates the rate of climb or descent using changes in static pressure.

Introduction
Aircraft instruments are the means of supplying the
pilot with information about the aircraft and its
operation could be useful and lead to safer flight.

 Instrument systems now exist to provide information

on the condition of the aircraft, engine, components,
the aircraft’s attitude in the sky, weather, cabin
environment, navigation, and communication.
Introduction
There are usually two parts to any instrument or
instrument system
1. Direct Sensing Instruments
2. Remote Sensing Instruments
Flight Instruments
The instruments used in controlling the aircraft’s
flight attitude are known as the flight instruments.
There are basic flight instruments, such as;
a) Altimeter

b) Airspeed indicator

c) Direction indicator

d) Artificial horizon

e) Turn coordinator

f) Vertical speed indicator

Flight Instruments
Pitot-Static Instruments
A typical pitot-static system head, or pitot tube, collects ram air and static pressure for use

by the flight instruments .
Airspeed Indicator
(ASI) is a flight instrument
indicating the airspeed of
an aircraft in knots.

The ASI measures the

pressure differential
between static pressure from
the static port, and total
pressure from the pitot tube
Airspeed Indicator (ASI)
Altimeter
The altimeter measures the height of an aircraft above a
fixed level.

The instrument senses this by taking the ambient air

pressure from the static port. That air is plumbed through
the back of the panel and into the back case of the altimeter.
Inside the altimeter is a sealed disc called an aneroid, or
bellows.

As the aircraft goes up, the pressure inside the case
decreases and the bellows expand. The opposite happens as
the aircraft descends.
Altimeter
Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI)
A Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI), also known as a Rate
of Climb and Descent Indicator (RCDI) is an
instrument which indicates the rate of climb or descent
of an aircraft.

As you climb, your static pressure decreases, and as it

decreases immediately in the diaphragm. But the
instrument casing is a different story. Since the
calibrated leak lets air out slowly, it creates a higher
pressure in the casing than the diaphragm. When that
happens, it creates a pressure differential, the
diaphragm is squeezed down, and the gears connected
to the VSI needle make it move up.
