Chapter 1 Book

1) Communication is inescapable, irreversible, and complicated as verbal and non-verbal language can be confounding and demanding with words having multiple meanings. 2) Effective communication is influenced by psychological, relational, situational, environmental, and cultural contexts. 3) Morals are personal rules while ethics are rules agreed upon by society that everyone is expected to follow in communication. 4) Ethical communication principles include showing mutual respect, dignity, accuracy, access to information, accountability, considering both parties equally responsible, acknowledging relative truths, using means that are also ethical, and balancing rights with responsibilities.

MORALS vs. ETHICS
• Morals – our own set of rules, so
others are neither expected nor
required to follow them.

• Ethics – rules accepted and approved

everyone.
