Resistance and their

Circuits
God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in
trouble.
Therefore I will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the
sea, though its water roar and foam, though the
mountains tremble at its swelling.
Psalms 46:1-3
Resistance
Resistance is anything that causes an opposition to the
flow of electricity in a circuit. It is used to control the
amount of voltage and/or amperage in a circuit.
Everything in the circuit causes a resistance (even wire).
Resistance
Unit of Resistance
It is measured in OHMS (Greek symbol Ω, Omega).
A conductor is said to have a resistance of one ohm
when one volt causes one ampere of current to flow
through it.
Factors Affecting its Resistance
Length of material: The resistance of material directly
to its length.
Cross- sectional Area: The resistance of a material is
indirectly proportional to its width.
Type of material: The type of material affects the
amount of free electrons able to flow through it.
Temperature: Some materials such as thermocouples
and thermistors are design to change their resistance
with temperature.
Factors Affecting its Resistance
Resistance of any material which has a uniform

cross- sectional area, A ,length, l, resistivity in

ohm- meters, can be represented in mathematical
form as:
Resistor Symbols
The symbol used in schematic and electrical drawings
for a resistor can either be a “zig-zag” type line or a
rectangular box.

and Electronics Engineers
Resistor Symbols
The two most common types of fixed resistors are
wire wound & carbon composition.
Carbon composition resistors are used when large
resistance is needed while wire wound resistors with its
metal finned body are used for very high wattage
applications.
Ohm’s Law

Georg Ohm: German physicist who first discovered the
relationship between voltage, current and resistance in any DC
electrical circuit.
He found that at a constant temperature, the electrical current
flowing through a fixed linear resistance is directly proportional to
the voltage applied across it and also inversely proportional to the
resistance.
Ohm’s Law
For easy way of remembering the formulas for ohm’s
law:
Ohm’s Law
A resistor or resistance
which obeys the rules of
ohm’s law is known as a
linear resistor.
Linear resistor has a
constant resistant for all
values of positive or
negative voltages and
currents.
Resistor Power

The unit of electrical power is in Watt(W). One watt of
power is equal to the work done in one second by one volt of
potential difference in moving one coulomb of charge around
a circuit.
The power rating of a resistor is an indication how much
heat a resistor or resistive element can safely dissipate or
convert into heat before damaging.

Resistor Color Code

There are two resistor color coded systems, Four-Band

System & Five- Band System.
Reading of colored bands is from left to right.
