DESIGN OF CANAL BASED

IRRIGATION SYSTEM
IRRIGATION ENGINEERING CE-431 L
Week 9
DISCHARGE / CAPACITY STATEMENT
 It gives the information about the discharge / capacity of canal at each section
or reach of canal.
 Preferably it should be started from the last reach and making the calculation
of discharges up to the starting reach of canal. Based on this discharge, canals reaches
are designed.

EARTHERN CHANNEL DESIGN (LACEYS SILT THEORY)(FPS UNITS)
 Design of an earthen channel is determining depth, width, side slopes and
longitudinal slope.

DESIGN OF OUTLETS (CRUMPS’ OPEN FLUME TYPE)
 The discharge formula for the open flume outlet is given as:

Q = C Bt H3/2

Where: Q is related to the coefficient of discharge, C, as given in the table

below; Bt is the width of the throat; and H is the height of the full supply level of
the supply channel above the crest level of the outlet in ft.
Bt C

0.3 ft – 0.39 ft 2.95

DESIGN OF WATER COURSES
 Design it as Lines and Rectangular using Manning’s formula:
Q = 1.49/n AR2/3S1/2
 Slope of water course = 1:5000 (Normally) varies from 1:3000~1:4000. Min
1:10000
 B = D, Velocity = 1 ft/sec, n = 0.013
 Calculate the depth of water in watercourse
