Arithmetic Sequence and Series

The document defines arithmetic sequences as sequences that follow a pattern of the form a1, a1 + d, a1 + 2d, a1 + 3d, etc., where a1 is the first term and d is the common difference between terms. It provides examples of arithmetic sequences and explains how to find the nth term of a sequence, the sum of the first n terms, and arithmetic means between nonconsecutive terms of a sequence. Formulas are given for determining the common difference, first term, and other terms given information about two terms.

Arithmetic Sequence

An arithmetic sequence or arithmetic progression is a sequence of the form

a1, a1 + d, a1 + 2d, a1 + 3d,… , a1 + (n – 1)d,

a1 = first term
d = common difference
n = term of the sequence
an = an-1 + d

Arithmetic Means
Arithmetic Means

The terms between any two given nonconsecutive terms of an

arithmetic sequence are called arithmetic means between the given
terms. In other words, if
a, x₁, x2, x3, … xm, b
where m≥ 1 from an arithmetic sequence, then x₁, x2, x3, … xm are
the arithmetic means between a and b.
