Soft Starting Of: Induction Motors

This document discusses soft starting of induction motors. It begins with an introduction to induction motors and their classification. It then discusses the motivation for soft starting, which is to avoid high inrush currents during direct starting that can cause mechanical and electrical issues. The problem statement outlines these issues in more detail. The objectives are to reduce maintenance needs, prevent power shut downs, extend component life, and allow for smaller components. The proposed method uses six SCRs in a back-to-back configuration to gradually increase the voltage applied to the motor during start up. The conclusion states that the soft starter design successfully limits high currents, voltages and torque during start up to prevent motor damage.

Introduction
AC induction motors are the most common electric motors in
the world. These simple, reliable and economical motors are
found in refrigerators, washing machines and furnaces,
as well as conveyors, pumps, winders, wind tunnels and
other industrial equipment.
These motors are further classified into two types:
• 3-Phase Induction Motors
• Single Phase Induction Motors
Motivation
Starting of Induction Motor :

• When the motor is directly connected to the supply it experiences a

very high momentary current known as Inrush Current.
• The starting torque of an Induction motor is approximately proportional
to the square of the starting current drawn from the line.
• This starting current is proportional to the applied voltage (V).
• This will result in induction motor developing far too much torque when
connected directly to the supply.
Problem Statement
Direct starting of Induction Motor will lead to
following effects:

 Mechanical Effects
The sudden impact at start up on the load, by the rapid
acceleration to full speed causes excessive wear on:
• Belts & Pulleys
• Gears & Chains
 Electrical Effects
• A heavy current surge on the electrical supply
which can be severe enough to cause voltage dips
and flickering lights.
• Burning of contacts due to high currents which are
many times the motor full load current.
Objective
The objective of this project is to nullify the following problems that
arise due to the effect :

• Continuous maintenance.
• Greater chance of unnecessary power shut down.
• Short component life.
• Oversized mechanical and electrical components to cater for the
power surge on start up.
Method Of Implementaiton
• By using six SCR’S in a back to back configuration, the soft
starter is able to regulate the voltage applied to the motor
during starting from 0 volts up to line voltage. From the
motor to the logic circuit used to control the SCR firing for
stabilization.
• Frequency do not change as in VFD.
• Only the voltage and current changes.

Torque Characteristics
Conclusion
A soft starter for induction motor is designed and developed to limit
the high current, voltage and torque value during the start of an
induction motor, otherwise it will damage the motor by burning the
windings or overheating. The proposed technique of soft starter
reduce the voltage which further reduce the initial high current and
torque. The voltage is reduced through the knob of potentiometer.
Due to which the voltage decreases which in turn reduces the
current and torque. So the induction motor start smoothly with less
voltage. Now induction motor runs at full speed with full voltage free
from burning or over hearting.
