TRANSMISSION

Definition

Transmission means the mechanism which transmit

the power from engine to the road wheels

This may be a gear box ( manual transmission ) or an

automatic transmission.

Functions of transmission:-
1 To vary torque ratio between engine and road
wheels as required
2 It provides neutral position.
3 Facility of reverse gear is also provided.
Necessity of transmission
Transmission necessity in a vehicle is answered by
considering

1 Variation of resistance to the vehicle motion at

various speeds
2 Variation of tractive effort of the vehicle available at
various speeds.

Total Resistance to the vehicle motion

3 Resistance due to wind, it is proportional to the

square of the vehicle speed.
4 Resistance due to gradient
3 Miscellaneous resistance – type of road, tyre friction
etc. this may be taken approximately to remain
constant with the vehicle speed.

Transmission necessity-

Let the vehicle is in the top gear and suppose the

vehicle is travelling on a gradient which gives total
resistance curve I. It is observed that OA is the
stabilizing speed. If the speed at any instant is less
say OB, the excess of tractive effort will accelerate it
to speed OA. Similarly if the speed at any instant is
OC, the excess of resistance will decelerate it to OA.

Let the vehicle go on next gradient of curve II. It is

noticed that stabilizing speed has decreased.
Now consider curve III. At this gradient, nowhere curve 3
cross curve III. Therefore the vehicle will not be able to
go at this gradient in the top gear. But if we shift to
second gear, we get a stabilizing speed OD, Similarly in
second gear also the vehicle will not be running on
gradient IV for which we shall have to shift to first gear.
A Leyland Truck has a gross vehicle weight of
890.26 N. Engine displacement is 10m3, power 77.3
KW at governed speed of 2400 rpm and maximum
torque 345.8 N-m at 1400 rpm. Rear axle ratio is
6.166:1, Fourth speed reduction ratio is 1.605:1,drive
line losses amount to 10.7 KW at 2400 rpm and 6.3
KW at 1400 rpm. Tyre size is .4572 X 1.016
m( Effective wheel diameter is 0.950 m), frontal
area of truck 6.95m2. Calculate the grades the vehicle
can climb in fourth gear in still air conditions
1. At governed engine speed
2. At speed of maximum torque in the equation
A truck weights 100111 N and engine develops 97 bKW at
2400 rpm. The transmission efficiency is 90% in top gear of
3.4:1 and 85% in third gear of 8.4:1. The performance of
vehicle is such that it will just reach the speed of 86.8 km/hr
at 2400 rpm at wide open throttle when running on the level
in still air and at the same engine speed in third gear it will
just climb a gradient of 1 in 14. If total resistance in N is,
 R= KW+KaAV2+Wsinθ
Calculate K , Ka and hence engine power required for
climbing a grade of 1 in 40 at 48 km/hr in top gear, how
much more weight can be added to the vehicle to use the
engine power fully under the above conditions
A passenger car travelling at 80.45 km/hr is
accelerated up a gradient of 1 in 20. The gross vehicle
weight is 11026.4N. It has a frontal area of 1.858 m2.
and the air resistance coefficient may be assumed as
0.0167. The rolling resistance is 221.7N. At the above
speed, the engine develops 58.88 kW corresponding
to an engine speed of 4000 RPM. Rear axle ratio is 5 :
1, transmission efficiency = 95%. Calculate :
i) The total tractive resistance.
ii) The tractive effort available at the wheels.
iii) The acceleration while ascending the above
gradient.
