Enhancing Reading Comprehension of Grade 3 Pupils Through Recorded Audio-Based Intervention in The New Normal

The document summarizes an action research study that aimed to improve the reading comprehension of 3rd grade students in Santa Central School through the use of recorded audio materials. The study found that students' mean reading comprehension scores increased significantly from 4.61 pre-test to 12.72 post-test after using the recorded audio intervention. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between pre-and post-test scores, indicating that the recorded audio materials were effective at boosting students' reading comprehension. The study recommends using audio materials to supplement reading instruction for students struggling with reading.

Enhancing Reading Comprehension

of Grade 3 Pupils through Recorded

Audio-Based Intervention in the New
Normal

LIBRADO L. VILLANUEVA
Teacher III/Researcher
Santa Central School, Santa, Ilocos Sur
Abstract
The purpose of the action research is to improve the reading comprehension of Santa
Central School's grade 3 learners. The research will utilize the simple experimental
research design (Mitchell, 2015). This design involves the introduction of an experiment
or an intervention to test if there is a change in the dependent variable. The pretest
scores of the respondents before the utilization of the intervention recorded audio
materials was low. After the utilization of the module, the posttest means scores of the
respondents increased markedly. Data showed that with the use of the recorded audio
materials, the scores of the respondents improved. Its implication is mastery of
competencies and enhancement of the learning outcomes on reading comprehension.
The t-test value is higher that the critical t-value, which means that there is a
significant difference of the mean scores of the posttest over the pretest. This finding
denotes that the recorded audio materials is effective in boosting the performance level
of Grade 3 students on reading comprehension. This research study proved that
recorded audio materials is an effective mode of to improve the reading comprehension
of the learners. The study recommends the use of audio materials to supplement the
skills of learners especially those who are struggling to read. Likewise, the study
recommends the use of recorded audio materials to other grade levels in the elementary
level for learners who are struggling or novice readers.
Introduction
All over the world, education is an important part of our lives. This provides all people
of the world the chances of a better life. Through education, each and every person is
provided with a great opportunity to improve their life and to uplift them to the bondage
of poverty. Hence, education must be relevant, purposeful and provides the necessary
tools to improve oneself and of the community they live in.
The purpose of the action research is to improve the reading comprehension of Santa
Central School's grade 3. The investigator noticed that it tends to be difficult for the
targeted students to read from previous events. This time, due to the current COVID-19
pandemic, there is a need to include a better way to develop their understanding of
reading.
This action study will be an opportunity to assess the efficacy of recorded voice content
(Mose & Kaschula, 2019) as a complement and intervention to enhance the reading
comprehension of Ilocos Sur School Division's Santa Central School grade 3 students.
Action Research Questions
1.What is the level of reading comprehension of
selected grade 3 pupils of Santa Central School
before and after the intervention?
2.Is there a significant difference between the level of
reading comprehension before and after the
intervention?
Proposed Intervention
The author employed a recorded audio material (Bastola, 2018) that the
pupils can use to support and supplement reading materials. When the
pupils are given a reading material, it was be supported with a recorded
audio material that they can hear which is the sound that elicited when they
read the reading material (Awopetu, 2017).
The intervention was implemented for 30 minutes. The pupils were given
the reading material. To help them read, they heard the audio material
which is the sound or voice of the reading material (Burton, 2016). The
learners appreciated the recorded audio material because, they can hear the
proper sound, intonation, pronunciation and proper expression.

Conclusions
The pretest scores of the respondents before the utilization of the intervention
recorded audio materials was low. After the utilization of the module, the posttest
mean scores of the respondents increased markedly. Data showed that with the
use of the recorded audio materials, the scores of the respondents improved. Its
implication is mastery of competencies and enhancement of the learning
outcomes on reading comprehension. The t-test value is higher that the critical t-
value, which means that there is a significant difference of the mean scores of the

effective in boosting the performance level of Grade 3 students on reading
comprehension. This research study proved that recorded audio materials is an
effective mode of to improve the reading comprehension of the learners.
Recommendations
The study recommends the use of audio
materials to supplement the skills of learners
especially those who are struggling to read.
Likewise, the study recommends the use of
recorded audio materials to other grade levels in
the elementary level for learners who are
struggling or novice readers.
