“STRESS AND COPING

STRATEGIES AMONG
FRESHMEN NURSING
STUDENT ON ONLINE
DISTANCE LEARNING”
1
CHAPTER 1:

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCT
ION 01
COVID-19 had an impact on people all across the world.
Classes in nursing have been utilized on the internet.

Students may view academic responsibilities as pressures when

confronted with this. According to the interactionist paradigm,
stress is any condition that taxes or exceeds an individual's or a
social system's sources or adaptive resources.
INTRODUCT
ION 01
Some research suggests that nursing students are prone to stress
than students of other majors. The first-year nursing students in
India experience severe stress 51.6% and 46.7% moderate stress
(Prasad et al, 2013)

61 nursing students in the Philippines, the majority experienced

moderate stress, the main source of stress is the number of tasks
(Labrague, 2013; Shiferaw et al, 2015; Hirsch et al, 2015).
INTRODUCT
ION
Stress experienced by students,
01
requiring them to seek ways or
using coping strategies in order to survive or to face problems
(Abasimi et al, 2015; Kaneko & Momino, 2015).

Stress makes a person who experienced it think and work hard

to solve a problem or challenge in life as a form of adaptation
responses to stay afloat (Abasimi et al, 2015).
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
1.3 Gadget used
1.4 Number of course in E-Learning

2. What causes of stress among the 1st year nursing

students at Saint Mary’s University- Bayombong
during the distance learning?
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
3. What are the coping mechanisms among the 1st
year nursing students at Saint Mary’s University-
Bayombong during the distance learning?

4. Is there a significant difference on their stress and

coping strategies when group according to their
demographic data in terms of age?
PURPOSE
To determine the cause s of stress among freshmen nursing
students on online distance learning

It would allow us to understand their coping strategies on online

distance learning
HYPOTHE
SIS
1. There is no significant difference in the causes of stress
among 1st year nursing students at Saint Mary’s University-
Bayombong during the distance learning.

2. There is no significant difference in the coping

strategies among the 1st year nursing students at Saint
Mary’s University-Bayombong.

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN
Quantitative research
Descriptive-correlational design
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
Saint Mary’s University Freshmen Nursing
Students
SAMPLING METHOD
• Random Sampling
• Slovin’s formula
• Slovin’s formula:

Where:
n = sample size
e = the sampling error (in percent or
decimal)
N = population
RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

The study is only

limited to freshmen nursing
student Saint Mary’s
University of Bayombong,
Nueva Vizcaya and does
not include students in
higher year levels
INSTRUMENTATION
The researchers will use a questionnaire
through an online survey tool specifically
Google form for the formulation of
personal profile, causes of stress and
coping strategies

The researchers adopt the tool which is the

“The Coping with Academic Stress
Questionnaire “(Cuestionario de
Afrontamiento del Estrés Académico) (A-
CEA) developed by Cabanach et al in
Spain was used to measure coping with
INSTRUMENTATION
3 parts
Personal profile( demographic profile
Cause of stress (20 items of questions)
Coping strategies (22 items

Scoring
The sources of stress will be
measured on a 4-point scale namely
always(4), sometimes(3), rarely(2) and
never(1) . The coping mechanisms was
also scored using the same scale type
with different set of questions.
VALIDITY and
RELIABILITY
The adapted tool was subjected for a pilot testing and analyzed
via SPSSS, the result form Cornbach Alpha was 0.71

The instrument will be given to fifth teen student at the same

time by the researchers, to consider the tool and confirmed to be
reliable for the study. The reliability coefficient obtained should
be x=0.88 for positive reappraisal factor, x=0.90 for seeking
support and x= 0.83 for planning.
