BEES In ecology, the term “keystone species” refers to those that have

a disproportionately large impact on the environment compared to

their abundance. They impact many other organisms’ ability to
survive and reproduce. For example, bees pollinate many plants,
including many fruit and vegetable crops.

Bees are keystone species, which means they recreate a vital

role in their ecosystem. In addition, they perform an essential job that
many other plants and animals rely upon.

Bees also fertilize wildflowers and other plants by spreading

pollen from flower to flower as they gather food. Some plants —
including many flowering trees, shrubs, and herbs — can only
reproduce when bees transfer their pollen from male to female
reproductive parts.
