DAMS
⚡Definition –

Dam is a solid barrier constructed at a suitable

location across a river valley to store flowing water.

⚡Storage of water is utilized for following-

🔻Hydropower.
🔻IrrigationWater for domestic consumption.
🔻Drought and flood control.
🔻For navigational facilities.
🔻Other additional utilization is to develop Fisheries
STRUCTURE OF DAM
🔻Heel : contact with the ground on the upstream Toe.

🔻Toe : contact on the downstream side.

🔻Abutment : Sides of the valley on which the structure of the dam rest.

🔻Galleries. : small rooms like structure left within the dam for checking operations.

🔻Diversion tunnel : Tunnels are constructed for diverting water before the construction of dam. This helps
in keeping the river bed dry.

🔻Spillway : It is the arrangement near the top to release the excess water of the reservoir to downstream
side

🔻Sluice way : An opening in the dam near the ground level, which is used to clear the silt accumulation in
the reservoir side.
CLASSIFICATION OF DAMS
⚡According to use –

🔻Storage dam» Gravity dam, Earth dam, Rock fill dam, Arch dam-

🔻Diversion dam» Weir, Barrage-

🔻Detention dam» Water spreading dam, Debris dam

- ⚡According to hydraulic design-

- 🔻Over flow dam» Spill ways-

- 🔻Non-over flow dam» Gravity dam, Earth dam, Rock fill

dam
⚡According to materials of construction-

🔻Rigid dams>>>Gravity dam, Arch dam, Buttress dam, Steel

dam

-🔻Non-rigid dam>>> Earth dam, Rock fill dam

FACTORS AFFECTING SELECTION OF DAM

🔻Topography

🔻Geology and Foundation Conditions

🔻Availability of materials

🔻Spillway size and location

🔻Earthquake zone.

🔻The height of the Dam

🔻Other factors such as the cost of construction andmaintenance, the life of dam,
aesthetics etc.
SELECTION OF DAM
SITE
🔻 The suitable foundation must be available. .

🔻The bed level at the dam site should be higher than that of the river basin.

🔻A suitable site for the spillway should be availablE.

🔻 availablity of materials.

🔻 cheap value of land For dam .

🔻The dam site should be easily accessible so that it can be economically connected to
important towns and cities

🔻Easy availablity of labor colonies

ADVANTAGES OF DAMS
🔻A clean, efficient, and reliable form of energy.

🔻 Does not emit any direct pollutants or greenhousegases..

🔻While the initial cost is high, theyare very inexpensive to operate.

🔻 cheapest electricity generated.

🔻 Dams prevent floods

.
🔻 Dams store water for irrigation.

🔻Many desert areas can now farmdue to dams and canals that supply water

🔻 water for local drinking needs.

🔻 Allows for fish farming.

DISADVANTAGES OF DAMS
🔻. In flat basins large dams cause flooding of large tracts of land, destroying local animals and
habitats.

🔻About 40 to 80 million people have been displaced.

🔻Plants generating greenhouse gases like methane.

🔻 The migratory pattern of river animals like salmonand trout are affected.

🔻Dams restrict sediments that are responsible for the fertile lands downstream.

🔻Saltwater intrusion into the deltas.

.• Large dams are breeding grounds for mosquitoes

🔻Around 400,000 km2 of land worldwide is submerged.
