CHAPTER – 6

THE TISSUES
WHAT ARE TISSUES ?

A Group of cells that are similar in

structure and work together to
perform a particular function in the
body is called a tissue.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF TISSUE
PLANT TISSUE AND ANIMAL TISSUE

 WHAT ARE PLANT TISSUE ?

A tissue is a cluster of cells, that are alike in configuration and work together to attain
a specific function.

 WHAT ARE ANIMAL TISSUE ?

They form the covering of the external surfaces, internal cavities and organs of the
animal body.
DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN
PLANT TISSUE
AND ANIMAL
TISSUE
PLANT TISSUE
MERISTIMATIC TISSUES
( CELL DIVIDE )
PERMANENT TISSUES
( CELL DO NOT DIVIDE )
“ DETAILED KNOWLEDGE
ABOUT PERMANENT TISSUE

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PERMANENT TISSUE ”

SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE AND COMPLEX PERMANENT
TISSUE
SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE
THEY ARE OF 3 TYPES
PARENCHYMA
 Parenchyma is a type of simple
permanent tissue that makes a major part
of ground tissues in plants, where
other tissues like vascular tissues are
embedded. They are non-vascular and
composed of simple, living and
undifferentiated cells, which are modified
to perform various functions.
SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE
THEY ARE OF 3 TYPES
COLLENCHYMA
 The cells of the tissue are living,
elongated, and have irregularly
thickened corners. The term was
coined by Schleiden. It provides
flexibility and mechanical support
to the plants. They have a little
intercellular space.
SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE
THEY ARE OF 3 TYPES
SCLERENCHYMA
 Sclerenchyma cells are elongated,
dead cells with lignin deposits in their
cell wall. They have no intercellular
gaps. Sclerenchyma is found in the
covering of seeds and nuts, around the
vascular tissues in stems and the veins of
leaves. Sclerenchyma provides strength
to the plant.
COMPLEX PERMANENT TISSUE
THEY ARE OF 2 TYPES

XYLEM AND PHLOEM

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN XYLEM AND
PHLOEM TISSUES
Xylem:   Phloem:
•Function - Vascular tissue that transports •Function - Vascular tissue that transports
water and dissolved nutrients from root to prepared food from the leaves and shoots to the
the aerial parts of the plant roots
•Type - Dead cell •Type - Living cell
•Location - Center of vascular bund •Location - The periphery of the vascular
•Cellular composition -  Lignin, bundle
cellulose •Cellular composition -  Phloem sap
•Structural composition - Xylem fibers, •Structural composition - Phloem vessels,
vessels, tracheids sieve tubes, sieve cells, phloem parenchyma,
•Movement direction - Unidirectional companion cells
•Support - Forms the bulk of the plants •Movement direction - Bidirectional
and provides mechanical support. •Support - Forms a smaller part of plants and
does not provide any mechanical support
ANIMAL TISSUE
DETAILED KNOWLEDGE ABOUT
ANIMAL TISSUE
THEY ARE OF FOUR TYPES
squamous, cuboidal, columnar, ciliated and
epithelialtissue glandular

 connective tissue Areolar , Adipose , Skeletal and Fluid

( they also divides into further parts )
  nervous tissue ( no type )
muscular tissue •Skeletal Muscle Tissue.
•Smooth Muscle Tissue.
•Cardiac Muscle Tissue.
EPITHELIAL TISSUE

 The covering or protective tissues in the

animal body are epithelial
tissues. Epithelium covers most organs and
cavities within the body. ... The skin, the lining
of the mouth, the lining of blood vessels, lung
alveoli and kidney tubules are all made
of epithelial tissue.
CONECTIVE TISSUES

 The cells of connective tissue are loosely

spaced and embedded in an intercellular
matrix. They are specialised to connect
various body organs. ... It is a strong and
nonflexible tissue. Bone cells are embedded
in a hard matrix that is composed of calcium
and phosphorus compounds.
MUSCULAR TISSUE

 Muscular tissue consists of elongated cells,

also called muscle fibres. This tissue is
responsible for movement in our body. Main
function of muscular tissues is to provide
movement to the body. Muscles contain
special proteins called contractile proteins,
which contract and relax to cause movement.
NERVOUS TISSUE

 Nervous or the nerve tissue is the main tissue of

our nervous system. It monitors and regulates the
functions of the body. ... Brain, Spinal Cord,
and nerves are composed of nervous tissue, they
are specialized for being stimulated to transmit
stimulus from one to another part of the body
rapidly.
SOME MORE KNOWLEDGE
Connective tissue
Blood platelets play a role
in coagulation (the clotting
of blood to stop bleed from
an open wound); white
blood cells play an
important role in the
immune system; red
blood cells transport
oxygen and carbon
dioxide. Blood is
considered a type
of connective
tissue because it is made
in the bones.
