Brief introduction
● Location: Agra, Uttar Pradesh
● Built By: Akbar
● Built in the Year: 1573
● Purpose: Main residence of the Mughals
● Area: 380,000 square meter
● Building material : red sandstones and
marble
● Architectural style: mughal
History
● Agra fort was built in the year 1573 under the reign of Akbar- one of the
greatest mughal emperors.
● It took more than 4000 workers and 8 years of hardship to complete the fort.
● Main residence of the emperors of the mughal dynasty until 1638 when the
capital was shifted from agra to delhi.
● Contains many magnificent palaces such as Jahangir Palace, Khas mahal-
built by Shahjahan. Audience halls such as: Diwan i khas and 2 mosques.
Building Materials

3. Foundation of bricks
● Built in an irregular semi-circle shape
● surrounded by a double wall of red
sandstone
● Broad deep moat surrounding the fort
● The wall extends to 2 km in perimeter,
70 ft high
● Fort stretches to 2.5 km
● Double ramparts have massive circular bastions at intervals, with
battlements, embrasures, machicolations and string courses.
● The base of the fort faces the bank of the river Yamuna
● Fortified on 3 sides and yamuna river on one side
● It is said that the fort once housed five hundred beautiful looking
buildings.
● Fine examples of the Mughal architecture within the fort are the
Delhi Gate, Amar Singh Gate and the Bengali Mahal.

1. Amar Singh Gate : open for public
2. Delhi Gate ( west ): For Indian Army ( main
entrance to the fort )
3. Jal Darwazah or Water Gate: Closed
4. North gate : Closed
The entrances were built in such a manner that
the invaders found it difficult to enter the fort Delhi Gate, Agra Fort

even with the help of war elephants.re is also an


inner gateway known as the Elephant Gate.

Jahangir Mahal
the red sandstone palace built for
Jahangir by his father Akbar
Shish Mahal
a mirror palace built by Shah
Jahan that features tiny glass-
mosaic decorations.
Khas Mahal
A white palace built by Shah
Jahan featuring floral etchings
and Jaali-styled windows. The
palace is positioned such that it
gives you a distance view of the
Taj Mahal.
Diwan-i-khas
The hall of private audience with
tall arched doorways made of
white marble. The renowned
Peacock Throne of Shah Jahan
with the famous Kohinoor
diamond used to be kept here
before it was shifted to Delhi.
Musamman Burj
an octagonal building with a clear
view of the Taj Mahal. This is the
place where Aurangzeb
imprisoned his father, Shah Jahan,
who spent 8 years of his life
watching his wife’s memorial
from a distance.
Macchi Bhavan
a large terrace with hallways that
connect to various chambers of
the fort
● These structures not only represent Mughal architecture, but are also fine
examples of Akbari architecture which is also known as Indo-Islamic
architecture.
● the Delhi Gate considered as the most prominent for its workmanship and
architectural design.
● It is said that the royal rooms of the fort were built in such a way that
they would remain cool even during the summer. The legend has it that
the walls were made hollow and then filled with water from the river, so
that they would remain cool.
● Red sandstone was brought all the way from Rajasthan and that was laid on the
external surfaces.The entire fort was built with the red sandstones.
● 1,000 elephants were used to transport the building materials to Agra.
● This appearance of the fort underwent a major change during the reign of Shah
Jahan; Use of white Marbles
● Destruction of many structures within the fort, only to rebuild them using white
marble.
