 The Basics Radiology Concepts

Radiology Concepts
Anodic Current and X-ray: General Concepts

• X-rays is a form of electromagnetic radiation

• As with any vacuum tube, there is a cathode, which emits electrons
into the vacuum and an anode to collect the electrons, thus
establishing a flow of electrical current, known as the beam and
called anodic current, through the tube. A high voltage power
source, for example 30 kV to 150 kV, called the tube voltage, is
connected across cathode and anode to accelerate the electrons. The
X-ray spectrum depends on the anode material and the accelerating
voltage

• In Mammography the tube has only one cable (Anode), the cathode
is the ground of the unit. Usually, the kV range is from 20 kV to 35
kV.

Radiology Concepts

Mammography principles
• Mammography is an x-ray imaging method used to examine the
breast for the early detection of cancer and other breast diseases
used as both a diagnostic and screening tool;
• During a mammogram, a patient’s breast is placed on a flat
support plate and compressed with a parallel plate called a paddle
and x-rays pass through it;
• The detector can be either a photographic film plate or a solid-
state detector;
Radiology Concepts

Compression Device
Compression is important for the following reasons:
• Reduces superposition of tissues;
• Decreases ratio of scattered to transmitted radiation reaching the
image receptor;
• Decreases the distance from any plane within the breast to the
image receptor reducing geometric unsharpness;
• Compressed breast provides lower overall attenuation allowing
radiation dose to be reduced;
• Compressed breast provides more uniform attenuation over the
image reducing the exposure range which must be recorded;
• Provides a clamping action reducing anatomical motion during the
exposure reducing image unsharpness.

AMULET FELICIA

 Overview
AMULET FELICIA
Amulet Felicia is amodular mammography solution optimized for imaging.

Main features:
 Short Isocentric C-arm specific with servo-assisted
movements;
 X-Ray Tube (Molybdenum anode) with High Speed
Starter (Optional);

 Touchscreen displays;

 Button that allows a quick release of the

compressor in case of emergency;

 Push-button on the head of the tube to

control the arm movements
AMULET FELICIA
COMPRESSION SYSTEM

The “Smart µPress” compression device has been redesigned with a new
coupling system for the paddles.

This system recognizes the inserted compression

paddle in order to adapt automatically the collimation
format.

A top rotating knob allows to lock/unlock the

compression paddle easily and in full safety. The
lock/unlock status is monitored by the unit and
shown by a LED and on touchscreen displays.
AMULET FELICIA
COMPRESSION PADDLES

Amulet Felicia is
equipped with a new
series of compression

new system of locking
and recognizing.
AMULET FELICIA
X-RAY COLLIMATION SYSTEM AND AUTOMATIC FILTER

AMULET FELICIA is equipped with an advanced X-ray collimation system.

The system detects the format/position of compression paddle and selects

automatically the proper collimation field.

The device includes an automatic filter with two different materials

(Molybdenum, Rhodium). The optimal combination Molybdenum anode/filter
allows to obtain the minimum dose and the best quality image over all ranges of
breast density.

All parts of the X-ray collimation system can be calibrated via software.

HIGH FREQUENCY X-RAY GENERATOR

AMULET FELICIA is equipped with a X-RAY generator with a new Inverter

integrated. This way the system is capable of providing a power to the load of 7,4 kW.

In this enhanced version, thanks to stored energy,

the exposure time is minimized to reduce
absorption from the net power supply.

Line Voltage Configuration

• Units are normally delivered for line voltage of 230Vac or

115Vac on request.

• Factory configuration can’t be changed in the field from

220/230/240 Vac to 115Vac or viceversa because of unit

labelling and specific components rating

• In case of 220 or 240 Vac, voltage selection is necessary for

TF/155-TT, TF/165-TT/TSM.
