Presentation On Three Phase M-6 Converter

(1) A three phase M-6 converter uses a delta connected transformer primary and a double star connected secondary to provide a six phase supply from six terminals for the converter. (2) It has a large output and the least ripple content compared to a three pulse converter because it uses a six pulse configuration. (3) The advantages of a three phase M-6 converter include reduced requirement for series inductance, lower ripple magnitude, less probability of discontinuous current, simpler commutation, and reduced distortion on the input side due to lower order harmonics.

Converter
Converters are electrical devices that convert the voltage from
alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).

Converter Classification
(1) According to the number of Phases of the input supply
(a) Single Phase Converter (b) Three Phase Converter
(2) Based on the number of output voltage pulses per cycle of the converter
(a) Single Pulse Converter (b) Two Pulse Converter
(c) Three Pulse Converter(d) Six Pulse Converter, and so on
(3) Based on the converter circuit configuration
(a) Midpoint type converter (b) Bridge type converter
Introduction to
Three Phase M-6 Converter
Three Phase Mid Point 6 Pulse converter has large output and
least ripple content as compared to 3 pulse converter.
Because of the requirement of a special type of conversion
transformer, 3 Pulse converters are not popular in use. The
conversion transformer is used to prevent de-magnetization. For
large output and least ripple content, a three phase controlled
rectifier with higher pulse number is used.
Generally for industrial applications Six-Pulse converters are
used.

• Va1, Va2 (Similarly Vb1, Vb2 and Vc1 and Vc2) are out of phase by 180o
• Va1, Vc2 (Similarly Va2, Vc1 and Vb2 , Va1) are out of phase by 60o
Relationship between Voltages

Va1 = Vmp Sinwt, then Vc2 = Vmp Sin(wt – 60o)

Vb1 = Vmp Sin(wt – 120o), Va2 = Vmp Sin(wt – 180o) = – Va1

Vc1 = Vmp Sin(wt – 240o), Vb2 = Vmp Sin(wt – 300o) = – Vb1

Vmp = maximum value of per phase voltage

Working
A thyristor having maximum voltage can go into conduction only if it has a firing pulse.

For continuous conduction mode, each SCR conducts for radians or 60o.

With resistive load, continuous conduction

occurs for 0 < a < 60° and discontinuous
conduction for 60 < a < 120°. The maximum
possible firing angle is therefore, 120°.
Advantages of
Three Phase M-6 Converter

• Requirement of series inductance is less

• Magnitude of ripple is less
• Probability of discontinuous current is less
• Commutation is simple
• Due to reduction in lower order harmonics, distortion
on the input side is reduced
