What is first aid?

-First aid is an immediate and temporary care given to a person who suddenly
gets ill or injured.
-It includes self-help and home care if medical assistance is not available or
delayed.
-It can mean the difference between life and death in extreme cases.
-However, we must know the limits of the first aid we can give, because
improper first aid
can do more harm than good in some instances.
-Anyone who gives first aid is a first aider.
Objectives of first aid
• To save lives
• To prolong life
• To alleviate

suffering
• Prevent further
Roles of first aid
1. It is a bridge that fills the gap between the victim and the physician.
The primary goal of first aid is to stabilize the patient's condition until they can receive medical attention from a
physician or healthcare professional. Therefore it opens a communication between an aider and the healthcare
professional to stay in touch while aiding an injured person.

2. It is not intended to compete with or take the place of the services of the physician.
This statement means that the service being referred to is not designed or intended to replace the medical care or
advice provided by a physician.

3. It ends when the services of the physician begin

this statement means that the purpose of first aid is to provide immediate medical assistance to a person who has
been injured or is suffering from an illness, but it is only meant to be a temporary solution until a medical
professional can take over the care of the patient. Once the patient is in the hands of a physician, the role of first
aid is essentially completed.
Characteristics of a good first aider

Good communication skills are essential for first aid since they increase the injured ’s chances of trusting you. In addition, you must be able to cooperate with others
and work well under pressure. Lastly, maintain a good attitude to ensure the injured person is comfortable.
Empathy
Being able to put yourself in the mind-set of a victim is a useful trait as it helps the responder understand that person’s perspective and to frame events positively.
Fitness
A range of emergencies take place in remote or awkward locations. So having someone who is physically fit enough to get to the victim, get them out of a situation or
get to the emergency services, is important.
Initiative
In a complex emergency scenario it takes initiative to assess the situation and quickly come up with a plan. For example, if the victim is trapped under an object in a
remote scene, you will want someone there who can quickly establish a plan of action that leads to successful rescue.
Positivity
A person who believes that there can be a positive outcome, no matter hurdles lie ahead, is far more likely to come to a person’s aid in what looks like a dire situation.
These types of people also have a strong belief in their ability to tackle challenges and beat the odds.
Selfless
It is hard to know for sure who will step up and who will freeze in a crisis. When a large crowd forms around a scene, it’s less likely that an individual will step up.
It’s easier to walk by and think “someone else will help”. It takes selflessness to be that person that blocks out potential possibility of injury or material loss and still
steps in to help.
Vigilance
A first responder must be able to quickly assess the situation and establish the potential risks to themselves and the victim. For example, if at any time the risk from a
hazard poses significant danger, they should consider whether approaching the victim is the best course of action.
Principles of first aid
• Preserve life: This includes preserving the life of
the casualty and the rescuer.
• Ensure protection of the casualty from further harm:
The treatment area needs to be safe and must not
have excess people.
• Provide pain relief: This includes the use of ice
packs or applying a sling.
• Prevent the condition from worsening: Ensure
that the First Aid procedures do not worsen the
patient's condition.
Steps on accessing emergency situation

1. Is anyone in danger?
-If the danger cannot be easily managed, call for help and protect the scene.
2. Move to the quietest victim
-Assist and prioritize the victim that needs the most help
-Ask the victim if he/she is okay.
-If they responds, quickly check for life threatening condition
-If not, check their airway.
3. Open the airway
-If the victim is not responding, do the head tilt-chin lift method and remove any obstructions
4. Check for breathing
-If the victim is breathing and not in any serious condition, move them to the recovery position
-If not, give rescue two breaths and call for help immediately
5. Look for signs of circulation
-If the victim drowned start cpr
-otherwise look for signs of life like movement and normal skin color.
