Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Kinetics of a Particle:
FORCE and
ACCELERATION
OBJECTIVES
• To state Newton’s Second Law of
Motion and to define mass and
weight.
• To analyze the accelerated motion of
a particle using the equation of
motion with different coordinate
systems.
• To investigate central-force motion
and apply it to problems in space
mechanics.
2.1 Newton’s Second Law of Motion
Kinetics – a branch of dynamics that deals with the relationship
between the change in motion of a body and the forces that causes
its change.

Example #1
The 50 kg crate shown in the figure rests on a horizontal surface for which the
coefficient of kinetic friction is . If the crate is subjected to a 400-N towing force as
shown, determine the velocity of the crate is 3s starting from rest.
Example #2
The crate has a mass of 80-kg and is being towed by a chain which is always
directed at 20° from the horizontal as shown. Determine the crate’s acceleration in
t=2s if the coefficient of static friction is the coefficient of kinetic friction is , and
the towing force is P=(90t²)N, where t is in seconds.
Example #3
The man pushes on the 60-lb crate with a force F. The force is always directed
down at 30° from the horizontal as shown, and its magnitude is increased until the
crate begins to slide. Determine the crate’s initial acceleration if the coefficient of
static friction is and the coefficient of kinetic friction is .
Example #4
The baggage truck A shown in the figure has a weight of 900lb and tows a
550-lb cart B and a 325-lb cart C. For a short time the driving frictional force
developed at the wheels of the truck is , where t is in seconds. If the truck starts
from rest, determine its speed in 2 seconds. Also, what is the horizontal force
acting on the coupling between the truck and cart B at this instant? Neglect the
size of the truck and carts. Assume there is no frictional force.
Example #5
The 100-kg block A shown in the figure is released from rest. If the masses of
the pulleys and the cord are neglected, determine the speed of the 20-kg block B
in 2s.
Example #6
A force F=15 lb is applied to the cord. Determine how high the 30-lb block A
rises in 2s starting from rest. Neglect the weight of the pulley and cord.
Example #7
Determine the constant force F which must be applied to the cord in order to
cause the 30-lb block A to have a speed of 12ft/s when it has been displaced 3ft
upward starting from rest. Neglect the weight of the pulleys and cord.
Example #8
The casting has a mass of 3 Mg. Suspended in a vertical position and initially
at rest, it is given an upward speed of 200 mm/s in 0.3-s using a crane hook H.
Determine the tension in cables AC and AB during this time interval if the
acceleration is constant.

Example #9
The 2kg shaft C A passes through a smooth journal bearing at B. Initially, the
springs, which are coiled loosely around the shaft, are unstretched when no force
is applied to the shaft. If a horizontal force of F=5kN is applied, determine the
speed of the shaft at the instant if the unstretched length is 450mm and length
became 250mm after applying the F. The ends of the springs are attached to the
bearing at B and the caps at C and A.
