WHAT IS ANIMATRONICS ?
Animatronics refers to mechatronic puppets.
+ = ANIMATRONICS
ELECTRONICS
PURPOSE
Animatronics are used in
situations where a creature
does not exist, the action is
too risky or costly to use real
actors or animals, or the
action could never be
obtained with a living
person or animal.
WHO CREATED ANIMATRONICS
• In 1951, machinist Roger Broggie
and sculptor Wathel Rogers (a
year before they would be
labeled Imagineers) led a team
tasked with creating a nine-inch-
tall figure that could move and
talk
• The term Audio-Animatronics
was coined by Walt Disney in
1961 when he started
developing animatronics for
entertainment and film.
WHY WERE ANIMATRONICS
CREATED ?
The modern era of animatronics began in
1961, when Walt Disney started developing
animatronics for entertainment and film.
Disney and his "imagineers" created a 9-inch
tall Dancing Man figurine. Though primitive
by today's standards, the little man captured
people's attention and got the animatronic
ball rolling.23-Jul-2015
HOW DO ANIMATRONICS FUNCTION?
Put simply, they're puppets that
can move thanks to technology.
They're run by people using
remotes or other devices to tell
them how to move. Can you think
of any examples of animatronics?
They're used in many movies.
TYPES OF ANIMATRONICS
• Classic Animatronics.
• Withered Animatronics.
• Toy Animatronics.
• Shadow Animatronics.
• Phantom Animatronics.
• Springlock Hybrids.
• Nightmare Animatronics.
• Funtime Animatronics.
DISADVANTAGE OF ANIMATRONICS
• They are difficult to build or
expensive to buy, they may wear
out, they require electricity or
compressed air, the cheap ones
lack realistic movement or
external coverings, people can
damage them if they can get
close and touch them, the
mechanical noises they produce
may ruin the effect, most aren't
weatherproof.
ARE ANIMATRONICS STILL USED ?
Animatronics are also common in
theme parks. Visits to Disneyland
and Disney World wouldn't be the
same without them. The
“Enchanted Tiki Room,” “Pirates of
the Caribbean,” and “Splash
Mountain” are a few examples of
rides that include them.
WHICH IS THE BIGGEST ANIMATRONIC
EVER CREATED
• The largest animatronic created
for a film is the Spinosaurus built
by Stan Winston Studio for
Jurassic Park III. The practical
creature, operated via hydraulics
to move and 'roar', weighed
25,000 pounds and was nearly
45 feet long.
MODERN ATTRACTIONS
The first animatronics characters
shown to the public were a dog
and a horse, as separate
attractions at the 1939 New York
World's Fair. Sparko, The Robot
Dog (the "pet" of Elektro the
Robot) is considered the first
modern-day animatronic
character, as it represented a
living animal rather than a purely
mechanical figure.An unnamed
animatronic horse, which was
reported to gallop realistically, was
also exhibited.
