DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
A. Growth- is the increase in physical size
of a structure or whole as by product of
cell division and multiplication.

B. Development- is the increase in the

skills or capacity to function.
DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
C. Maturation – is used synonymously with
development; also known as readiness.

D. Cognitive Development – increases in

abilities to solve problems, to understand and
apply learning experience, to accommodate
knowledge and adapt to practical settings, and
dexterity to handle new situations.
Parameters of Growth
• Weight- is the most sensitive indicator of
growth especially low birth weight.

Doubles by 5to 6months

Triples by 12months
Quadruples by 2-21/2 years
Parameters of Growth
• Height- is measured in inches, feet, or
centimeters.

Increases by 1inch per month in the 1st

6months and by ½ per month from age
7to12 months
Weight & Height Growth
1. How to measure development?
• By directly observing the child performances;
• By noting parent’s description of the child
progress;
• By DDST (Denver Developmental Screening
Test); In the Philippines, it is modified as MDST
(Metro Manila Developmental Screening Test)
Metro Manila Developmental Screening
Test
• is a presumptive identification of possibly
unrecognized disease or developmental
defects through the application of test and
procedures which can be done quickly. It is
designed to recognize developmental delays in
children ages 2 weeks to 6 ½ years old. In this
test, four aspects of the child are evaluated:
personal-social, language, fine motor
adaptive, and gross motor behavior.
2. 4 Main Rated Categories of DDST
1. Language – ability of the child to
communicate.
2. Personal Social – ability of the child to
interact.
3. Fine Motor Adaptive – the prehensile ability
or the ability to use hand movements
4. Gross Motor Skills – the ability to use large
movements.

Stages of Growth and Development
• Prenatal from conception to birth
• Infancy
Neonatal – the first 28 days
Formal Infancy – from 29th days to 1 year old
• Early Childhood
Toddler – 1 – 3 years
Preschool – 4-6 years
• Middle Childhood
School Age – 7-12 years
• Late Childhood
Pre- adolescence – 11 to 13 years
Adolescence – 12 to 21 years
PRINCIPLES OF GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT
1. Growth and Development is continuous
process that begins from conception and
ends in death. (Womb to Tomb principle)
2. Not all parts of the body grow at the
same time or all the same rate.
(Asynchronism principle)
3. Each child is unique.
PRINCIPLES OF GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT
4. Growth and development occurs in a
regular direction reflecting definite and
predictable patterns or trends.
5. Behavior is the best gauge of normal
development.
6. PLAY is the universal language of a child.
PRINCIPLES OF GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT
7. Perfect practice makes perfect learning.
8. A right time for initiation of learning and
experience is waiting for every individual.
9. Primitive neonatal reflexes are lost first
for the next development to occur.
