mean and variance of

probability distributions
Prepared by: CRISCHARM T. VAPOR

Direction: Find the posible
words that is inside in the
puzzle.
How do we compute the mean and
variance of a discrete random
variable?
Mean:
If P(x) is the probability of every value of
x then, Ev or u = Σ[xP(x)]
Where; X is the possible outcomes of
the random variable,
P(x) is its probability
Scenario : Suppose you want to estimate the
average length (inches) of your bed deck. The
error in the estimated values were recorded
and tabulated as follows:
Error(x) 1 2 3 4 5

P(x) 0.25 0.1 0.3 0.15 0.20

E(x)= Σ[xP(x)]
=[(1)(0.25)+(2)(0.1)+(3)(0.3)+(4)
(0.15)+(4)(0.20)]
=(0.25+0.2+0.9+0.6+0.8
= 2.75
Variance:
It is the measure of how spread the
data are. It measure the variation of
the values of a random variables
from the mean. Symbol used for
variance is ꝺ=∑(x-u)²P(x)
where:

X is the no. of posible outcomes of

the random variable. U is the
expected mean and P(x) is the
probability.
x 0 1 2 3
P(x) 1/8 3/8 3/8 1/8

Ꝺ2 = Σ(x-u)2P(x)
= [(0-2.75)2(1/8)+(1-2.75)2(3/8)+(2-
2.77)2(3/8)+(3-2.75)2(1/8)]
= (1.94+1.15+0.21+0.008)
= 2.31
Scenario 2:
Problem: Suppose you want to
estimate the average monthly
household expenses for a group of
families in your neighborhood. You
collect data on the monthly
expenses (in peso) for five families.
Mean:
Error(x) 10 20 30 40 50
P(x) 0.25 0.1 0.3 0.15 0.20
E(x) = Σ[xP(x)]
=[(10)(0.25)+(20)(0.1)+(30)(0.3)+(40)
(0.15)+(50)(0.20)
=(2.5+2+9+6+10)
=29.5
Variance:
x 0 1 2 3
P(x) 1/8 3/8 3/8 1/8
Ꝺ2 = Σ(x-u)2P(x)
= [(0-29.5) (1/8)+(1-29.5) (3/8)+(2-
2 2

29.5)2(3/8)+(3-29.5)2(1/8)]
=( 108.8+304.6+283.6+87.8)
= 784.8
ACTIVITY
Directions: In 1 whole sheet of paper solve
the following problems.
