EC302.24 1
RECAP

In our previous sessions we have discussed the need of

transistor biasing, need of stabilization and different

stability factors

EC302.24 2
Objectives

On completion of this period you would be be able to

understand

• The different biasing methods used.

• The circuit of fixed bias.

EC302.24 3
Requirements of Biasing circuit

A Biasing network associated with a transistor should

• Establish the operating point in the middle of active

region.

• Stabilize the collector current Ic against temperature

variations.

• Make the operating point independent of parametric

varation

EC302.24 4
Types of Biasing methods

• Fixed bias

• Collector – Base bias

• Self bias or Potential divider bias or

universal

FIXED BIAS CIRCUIT

EC302.24 6
Circuit Analysis

• Since VBE is small (0.3 v for Ge and 0.7 for Si) in

comparison with VCC.

• IB= (VCC – VBE) / RB ≅ VCC / RB

• Since the supply voltage VCC and resistance RB are fixed

once designed ,IB is also fixed.

• Hence the name Fixed Bias.

• IC = βIB
EC302.24 7
• Fixed bias circuit is simplest way to bias a transistor.

• But stability is very poor.

• Ico AND β changes with rise in temperature.

• Since Ic= β IB+ (1+β) Ico also increases.

• Hence operating point gets shifted.

EC302.24 8
Stability factor ‘S’ of fixed bias circuit

• Expression for S = (1+β) / (1- β dIB / dIC)

In fixed bias circuit IB is independent of IC

Hence S = (1+ β)

EC302.24 9
Example :- If β of a transistor is 150;

Then S = (1 +β) = 151

• This means collector current increases 151 times

as much as ICO.

EC302.24 10
Advantages of fixed bias

• Biasing circuit is very simple.

• Very few components are required.

• Biasing conditions can be set easily.

• Calculations are simple.

• No loading of the source by the biasing circuit.

EC302.24 11
Disadvantages of fixed bias

• This method provides poor stability.

• No means to stop self increase of collector current IC.

• There are good chances of thermal runaway due to high

stability factor.

EC302.24 12
