Executive Summary

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud
platform, offering over 175 fully featured services from data centers globally. AWS has led the
Gartner MQ for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service for 9 straight years.
Initially, AWS’s stance was that public cloud was the ideal place for ALL workloads and they didn’t
acknowledge the need for hybrid cloud. However, AWS’s hybrid cloud story has been evolving for
2 or 3 years, and they acknowledge that hybrid cloud is the new normal and are now positioning
AWS Outpost as a fully managed service to extend AWS services to the data center.
AWS and NetApp are partners, we also offer products and services that can compete. NetApp is
focused on delivering cloud solutions to help our customers regardless of where their workloads
run. NetApp provides cloud solutions that can save up to 90% of cloud infrastructure costs
through our cloud storage platforms, application optimizations, and modern workplace foundation.

What to expect from Amazon

 Positions ‘cloud’ as inevitable, and expects almost all

workloads to end up there eventually
 This message has softened in recent years and hybrid is now at
least acknowledged

 Positions on-premises infrastructure as ‘legacy’ and a

burden on innovation
 Focuses on ease of use and simplicity
 Targets developers
 Amazon’s marketing messages;
 Trade capital expense for flexible expense
 Benefit from massive scalability
 Increase speed and agility
 Focuses on business outcomes not infrastructure

Storage Snapshot Types

Redirect-on-Write Snapshots (NetApp Cloud Volumes)
• Like copy-on-write snapshots, but instead of copying the original data to the snapshot location as and when updated,
the original data stays as is and the changes to those blocks are redirected and written to the location set aside for
snapshots and the metadata is updated to point the active file system to the new blocks, as necessary. This method
has the lowest write penalty.
Copy-on-write Snapshots (Most Hyperscale Companies)
• With copy-on-write snapshots, a dedicated storage capacity is reserved for snapshot data. This storage capacity will
hold all the metadata (such as information about where the original data resides in the file system) plus a copy of the
original data whenever changes occur to the original data blocks.
• These snapshots are quick to create due to the fact that normally most data blocks only need a metadata copy
operation during snapshot creation. However, as and when the original data blocks are updated or overwritten by the
active file system, the contents of the original data blocks are copied over to the snapshot location in the background.
That can have a performance impact on subsequent write operations to the original blocks after the snapshot has
been created due to having to wait for the original data blocks to be copied over to the snapshot location.
Split-Mirror (AKA Clone) Snapshots (Azure Block Storage)
• Creates an identical copy of the source data volume, file system, or LUN during the creation of the snapshot. Due to
the data copy operation, snapshot creation can be time consuming as consumes twice the amount of storage
capacity.

Storage Classes and Lifecycle Management

• EFS Standard Storage Class: Data is stored regionally within and across multiple availability zones.
• EFS Standard Infrequently Accessed Storage Class: Cost optimized for files accessed less
frequently.
• Customers can enable an EFS Lifecycle Management for their file systems and choosing an age-off
policy of 7, 14, 30, 60, or 90 days. When EFS Lifecycle Management is enabled, files automatically
move from EFS Standard Storage to Standard-IA Storage.
• EFS One Zone Storage Class (NEW): Data is stored in a single zone, lowering the price-point for non-
critical files.
• Availability of 99.9% instead of 99.99%
• EFS One Zone-Infrequently Access Storage Class (NEW): Data is stored in a single zone, lowering
the price-point for non-critical files.
• Availability of 99.9% instead of 99.99%.
• Same EFS Lifecycle Management policy as EFS Standard Infrequently Accessed Storage Class.

limitations:
• Only supports NFSv4
• Limited snapshot capabilities
• Limited number of file systems per account
• Complex to scale

• Amazon FSx for ONTAP

• Support for NFSv3, NFSv4/4.1, SMBv2/3.1.1,
iSCSI, and dual protocol access
 80% of enterprise file data is on NFSv3
• Redirect-on-write space efficient snapshots
 Sub millisecond latency

• NetApp reliability, availability, security built-in

• 25+ years experience in developing solutions

What Customers Should Know About AWS

Public cloud is not cheap

• Companies are caught off guard with large cloud bills.
• FSx for Windows is more expensive - All in, $/GB is $.17/GB, vs CVS standard at $.10/GB.
• Unpredictable costs if your workload changes or Amazon decides to change prices including
various fees for transfer, early deletion and API access.
• Cost waste for low utilization of I/O when EBS Provisioned IOPs is the option being used.
• An AWS volume left running when you stop the EC2 instance for a long time, or an EBS volume
running on its own when an EC2 instance is not attached can cause overspending.
• Consultants and systems integrators increase the cost of migration.
• Hidden cost (egress charges and API request charges – data request fees).

What Customers Should Know About AWS

Performance
• Cloud Volume Services provides 4x better throughput and 15x higher IOPS than EFS on multiple
instances.
• Cloud Volumes is able to deploy volumes in seconds, FSx for Windows and FSx Lustre takes 10's
of minutes.
• Both AWS and Azure use copy-on-write snapshots, redirect-on-write uses 1/3 the number of I/O
operations when modifying a protected block, and no extra compute overhead reading a snapshot.
Copy-on-write can have a big impact on performance of the protected item.
• Because of the Redirect-on-Write nature of the underlaying ONTAP technology, storing or retaining
snapshots has no performance impact, that isn’t the case with AWS.
• FSx Luster delivers raw performance as a distributed file system/data solution and has very limited
features; for HPC use cases, CVS Premium and Extreme tiers are best in class and for a wider
range of customer use cases.
• Even at the premium tiers, performance is highly variable depending on load generated by others
sharing the infrastructure - Glacier tier takes hours to retrieve data.

What Customers Should Know About AWS

Data Management
• AWS doesn’t provide writeable snapshots like FlexClone.
• Only FSX for Windows provides limited data reduction with deduplication.
• AWS File Services do not provide application-consistent snapshots. An application-consistent
snapshot will ensure the application accessing the data is aware of the snapshot being taken which
prevents data corruption.
• Cloud Sync provides a much richer set of data migration capabilities compared to AWS DataSync
and is FREE with CVS.

Lock-in
• Hyperscalers want to lock customers into their technology stack including extending into the data
center.
• AWS, Azure, and Google have no interest in offering multi-cloud solutions. We give customers cloud
on their terms with the cloud provider that matches their business requirements, like analytics from
Google services and developer tools from Amazon.

MENU

What Customers Should Know About AWS

Backups
• By default, FSx backups are retained for 7 days, however customers can change this rate to any
time period from 0 through 35 days. 35 days isn’t enough for mission-critical and production related
workloads, Cloud Backup Services
• When performing backups using Elastic File Services the operation counts towards your allowed
file system throughput, and this will slow down access to EFS for all attached devices.

Cloud Backup Services provides enterprise level data retention capabilities!

What Customers Should Know About AWS

Public cloud isn’t as easy as claimed

• New skills required and there is a skills gap in the market.
• Customers don’t understand all of the options and have difficulty managing public expenses and
unpredictable spikes in costs.
• AWS EFS supports NFS 4.0 and 4.1, but an important caveat is that NFS on Amazon only works
with Linux instances (Amazon provides shared storage for Windows using a different service,
Amazon FSx).
• FSx Luster was dropped from the Linux kernel; Client install requires 3rd party. Not suitable for
enterprise grade applications.
• FSx Luster is a custom stand-alone file system requiring a custom driver.
