Specific Learning Objectives: At the end of an hour, 80% of the learners
will be able to:
1. Identify the Software Installation Types and Portable Installer Software;
2. Determine the use of a Portable Bootable Device and how it is made using the
Rufus Application
3. Acquire the steps in creating a bootable USB device using Rufus Application
PRE-TEST:
Directions: Read each sentence carefully. In a ¼ sheet of paper, write TRUE if the statement is
correct and FALSE if otherwise.
1. A computer has boot sequence options for the user to change the order of the drives available.
2. Rufus Application requires at least a minimum of 8 Gigabyte USB flash drive storage capacity.
3. Windows Installation can be done using bootable devices such as thumb drives or pen drives.
4. A firewall does not prevent downloading and installations of software inside a computer.
5. Installation of various applications in Windows Operating System do not demand any software or
hardware requirements at all.
INSTALLER
An installer is a piece of software that is used to install software Installers simplify the process of installing software by providing the
user with the ability to select the desired options
Media - based software installation - This is the most common type of installation. It will
take all of the files that make up your software and place them onto a span of disks. It willcontain some form of an executable to call the
process as well.
Web - based software installation - This is a pretty cool way to deploy software that has been picking up popularity in the web. In a
web-based, it will do an integrity check and onlydownload the files that your system needs. This saves you time in downloading.
Theproblems with this type of installation come up when you introduce firewalls and strict security.
Single exe installation - This is one that most of us are familiar with, the install is a selfcompressed executable file that you run which
will extract itself and contains all of the files needed to run your installation as well as the explanation file which tells the software where
toload and what changes to make.
Windows Installer installation - With the introduction of Windows 2000 into our lives came the introduction of the Windows Installer
service, which resides on a client machine and runs
Portable Installer Software
A program that doesn't have any configuration options is also a portable application. A portable application
(portable app), sometimes also called standalone, is a program designed to read and write its configuration
settings into an accessible folder in the computer, usually the folder where the portable application can be
found.
This makes it easier to transfer the program with the user's preferences and data between different
computers. Like any application, portable applications must be compatible with the computer system
hardware and operating system.
If we are trying to install Windows Operating System on a laptop thatdoes not have a DVD drive, or we
want a portable installation tool that we can use on a lot of computers, creating a bootable USB Windows
installation drive may be the answer we are looking for.
Portable Bootable Device
A boot device is any piece of hardware that can read or control a computer to start. For example, a hard
drive, floppy disk drive, CD and USB jump drive are all considered bootable devices.
The RUFUS Application
Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives,
memory sticks, etc. Rufus is a free utility created by Pete Batard for Microsoft Windows that creates
bootable USB flash drives from ISO image files. Rufus supports Windows versions 7 and later.
Requirements:
Rufus Application
Laptop or Desktop Computer
Windows 7 OS / Windows Server 2008 r2 disk images ISO files
8 GB USB flash drive (minimum recommended)
The RUFUS Application
An ISO file, often called an ISO image, is a single file that's a perfect representation of an entire CD, DVD, or BD. The
entire contents of a disc can be precisely duplicated in a single ISO file. An ISO file works in much the same way. The
file itself is no good unless it can be opened, assembled, and used.
Steps in Creating a Bootable Device
1. Insert your flash drive. Make sure that it is being read by your device
2. Run the Rufus Application and check if your flash drive is already recognized. Notice that the Start Button is disabled.

5. Press “START” to initiate the processs.
6. A warning prompts because the USB device has existing data inside. Click OK to continue.
OS INSTALLATION
Installing Windows usually sound frightening task for beginners. That’s fine. Nothing to worry about because
everything will be made easy for you. If you are planning to install Windows Operating Systems, no need for you to
run to other experts or computer technicians because I am telling you now that you can do this task all by yourself!
Guidelines in OS Installation:
According to Tim Fisher in his online article “What Is an ISO File?”, he mentioned the
following concepts related to Installation of Operating Systems. These are as follows:
OS INSTALLATION
To install the operating system on the computer using a CD, DVD or USB Flash Drive you need to configure
your computer to boot from the CD, DVD or USB Flash Drive. You can change the boot sequence in your
BIOS setup, and setting the CD, DVD or USB Flash Drive to be the first boot device
Some computers may also allow you to access the boot sequence directly at computer start up, without
entering the BIOS, by pressing a specific key on the keyboard. The key to press differs for each computer,
but is often either the Delete key or one of the function keys at the top
If the operating system software came on a USB flash drive, you need to configure the computer to boot to
a USB device as the first boot device.
Once the computer is configured to boot to the proper device, the computer should load the operating
system installation program and guide you through the install process.
You will be asked questions along the way for configuration of basic settings, like date and time, user
account name, and if you want to enable automatic operating system updates. Go through the installation
steps, answering questions and selecting the preferred options.
OS INSTALLATION
NOTE: If you are installing a newer version of an operating system that is already on your computer, the
installation process should ask if you want to upgrade. If you do not want to install the operating system
as an upgrade, you can choose the option to erase the current operating system start fresh.
LADDER OF LEARNING
Direction: Recall the steps on how to create a bootable device. Use the Ladder of Learning
provided. Each ladder steps represents a single step of the procedure for the given scenario.
APPLICATION
You need to set up a computer with a dual-boot system (e.g., Windows and Linux). What
steps would you take during the installation process to achieve this?
POST TEST
POST TEST: Matching Type
Directions: Read each sentence carefully. Choose the correct answer (letter and word) to the questions in Column
A from the choices in Column B. Write them in a ¼ sheet of paper.
